The first TV spot for Portal 2 has been released, and features the robots Atlas and P-body as they discover the wonders of the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device. Portal 2 is set to release this April on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

10 and up? Was Portal rated for everyone?

Well, that, or the game simply doesn't have any content that the ESRB would consider Teen or over. There was no blood, gore, sex, cursing, drug use, etc.

In terms of violence, even in the first Portal there was a constant threat of violence and the suggestion of things that happened before, but nothing explicit. Falling into acid, being shot by a turret, falling into an infinite pit, or being burned alive were really the only violent imagery you'd content with. And we've seen that the energy spheres and turrets are still there, so... dunno.

Is it possible the original Portal carries T raiting because it was packaged with HL2:Ep2 and TF2? Was it ever rated on its own?

I admit I don't know how the rating would work in that instance. Anyone?

Valve - After several best Rated M Shooters they made, their first Rated E game? Lol, thats cool. Maybe we might get some young Valve fans lol.

It was rated T for Teen... are they really targeting kids for this game? It sure looks like it (I can't think of any reason why a 10 year old shouldn't have played Portal anyway).

I'm pretty sure that simply making the character non-human is why there is a rating difference. To the ESRB, mild violence against a human character is much more mature than mild violence against cute little wo-bots.

You play as Chell too, so I don't see that being the reason.

Maybe they were just a little smarter this time around and realized the true nature of the game. For instance in another game falling into a pit of acid could be this giant dramatic massacre while in portal it's "Hm, gotta retry this puzzle". Portal 1 should of had an E rating imo.

The commercial is cute I suppose. Its interesting though that Valve made these commercials all in-house

Valve: Ad agencies almost ‘worthless’

Thats article reminds me of that particular episode of Top Gear where the presenters tried to make their own adverts for the cars they were using, lol

They were fired for constantly promoting the speed of the car (as if you would be able to drive over 80 legally). In the end the cars were probably used for a cliche artiste impression of the car :|

Anyone notice they were using the singleplayer portal gun? I guess they just wanted to show off the official blue and orange colours.

Yeah, I noticed Atlas is supposed to use Blue and Purple, but P-body never used his portal gun so they didn't need to avoid confusion, it's only a trailer after all.

This thread is cool as long as Sliver was joking about "Atlus and Peabody"

I assume the inclusion of blood in a video game is enough to give it at least a Teen rating, but since Portal 2 doesn't seem to have any of that stuff, it got an Everyone 10+. This is good for Valve because it increases their sales, if only slightly.

Why do people keep asking why they're focusing on the robots? It's because they're more interesting. Chell is just a normal looking woman. The robots are robots. Which is a more interesting and eye-catching thing to advertise with?

I'm sure if they dressed up Chell in a nice, sexy -- wait, never mind, I agree with your point.

They almost never put focus on the human protagonist in their FPS's. Freeman himself only appears in art pieces and game covers.

With L4D2 Valve did 2 I believe, so I think there will be a second one closer to launch.

I thought the second one was for the gamestop exclusive baseball bat. I don't know how they could make the Portal 2 pre-order bonus exciting.

"Hey Kids!. Pre-order Portal 2 at Gamestop and your co-op bots will look slightly different than everyone else's!"

This seems like a pretty obvious problem to me. Why would they show us videos of Chell, who once we by the game we will never actually see the model of again? When you play co-op you'll be looking at the other robot all the time.

Unless, of course, you saw her through another portal.

.. Did you play the first Portal?

The robots are cute and on the front cover. Their co-op success with things like Left 4 Dead has been hugely important in their breakthrough to new gaming platforms so we see a lot of their marketing from that angle. We need to remember we are the real enthusiasts, I reckon the average teen playing Portal 2 goes into it having no idea the protagonist is called Chell. Even if you played Portal 1, how much focus is actually put on her as a character? She's fairly anonymous.

Oh man, I forget all the half-second glimpses of her calves. No yeah, she should definitely be the one in all the media.

Has there been any official news on how roughly how long the SP will be?

Digi can't fit 7.5 hours in his butt.

Trust me, I've tried.

I want this game now! A month is too long to wait
