Hell yeah!

Seems obvious to me Portal was Valve's ingenious way of training us to "think with portals" for a later release.

I wouldn't want it overused though, perhaps in a specific level. But I'm confident that whichever way Valve incorporate it into the game, it will be perfect.

Maybe.

I'm inclined towards the opinion that adding the portal gun to Ep3 or HL3 would introduce a too prominent puzzle element. After all, that is essentially what Portal was: a puzzle game. Its more cerebral elements aside, Half-Life has primarily and always been a pure action FPS. Trying to mesh the two too much and you're losing the essence of what the games essentially are.

Of course, if Valve could pull it off while retaining the action, that would be great. I just can't think of much in the ways that don't come at the expense of something else.

I think if done correctly, it could greatly enhance the action.

Imagine Advisors throwing things at you with their telekinetic powers, and there's no possible way to dodge it- unless you have the Portal Gun. Using the gun, you can get an advantage that would allow you to defeat the Advisors.

Something along those lines would be a lot more fun than the usual "shoot-til-it's-dead/use-Gravity-Gun" spiel. To me at least.

I'd say <profanity> No! But then... I couldn't really say. It'd be kind've cool to fight against real enemies with it. But then you'd be carrying around a gravity gun and a portal gun... and it'd be really weird. Because they're practically the same weapon. Just for different um... things.

Oh yeah, and HL3 will have a Chrono Gun :p

I wouldn't want it in Half Life 3. It was made for Portal. Therefore it stays IN Portal.

i dont think many people would care if they never made episode3 and just made endless portal sequels instead.

yes this is why I think it shouldn't be included

i say maybe

half life is not like gears of war, were you start out shooting shit, it has a real story to it and i think portal had something to do with it, after all Aperture science is in the half life world.

i just wouldn't want it to get over used.

Physics puzzles are starting to get stale, however I don't want to see Gordon's model.
I'll say maybe.

may i ask why?

The game concept of 'Portal' needs to stay where it belongs. Adding a portal gun to Half Life make the game incredibly lame plus the last thing I want is for there to be a Gordon model and possibly a voice for him.

Half Life 2 and it's expansions are awesome how they are right now, and adding things that would drastically alter the games concept and game play would be a huge mistake.

Episode 3 will not contain the Portal gun, it will however contain Chell and GLaDOS

I have no doubt that Valve will release something at some point that combines the Portal gun with combat, but I really doubt that it will be Ep3. However I do think that it is a possibility that Portals will have a cameo appearance in the Borialis.

Because it would break Half-Life code.

If you don't know what Half-Life code is, Google it.

jezus another stupid topic about a stupid question we already know the answer - portal is a puzzle game and not designed for half life, how can u possible play normal earth maps with a portal gun: "spawns" - shoots down - shoots on the other side of the map = "finish".

maybe...
if it were in Ep.3, then valve would HAVE to make a model for gordon, thus ruining what they've been doing for years: you ARE Gordan Freeman.

hmm...

Got it...

Chell will be in Episode 3, but she will have lost the portal gun and will be searching to destroy aperture science...

Portal 2 (or whatever the name will be) will showcase how Chell gets to meet up with Gordon and Alyx, probably finishing with a Helicopter crash or something.

Well for one the Hazard Suit includes a helmet, so you would never actually you know...SEE gordon. Anybody remember the old HEV model from Hl1 deathmatch? That's what Gordon looks like with the HEV suit on. Oh and all the concept art, box art, marketing materials that include Gordon's face? Are you just assuming that stuff is bogus?

Like it or not you've already been shown Gordon Freeman. There is a PICTURE of him in HL2 with the rest of the scientists. Please...enlighten me as to how showing a model of a dude running around in an HEV suit would be gamebreaking for you.

Edited out a harsh comment

I don't think you understand.

You just don't...

Like ever.

Your right. I should just agree with everything you say.

Wait...

HAHA! You almost got me there! I think I'll keep my own opinion thank you very much.

Fine, but be it on your own head, I never instructed you to do so.

I think I'll keep my own opinion thank you very much.

Your opinion didn't differ from that of mine. I didn't give you my opinion.
You just decided that because I stated that you don't understand the feelings of millions of Half-Life fans out there, that you should obviously believe what I believe. Urgh, you're just stupid.

Well you never really stated "You don't understand the feelings of millions of half life fans out there". You specifically said "you don't understand". But it doesn't matter either way because I DON'T understand what is going through millions of peoples heads. Nor would I ever claim to. Why would I? I never took a survey. I didn't go around asking all the half life fans what they thought about this particular topic. I doubt you have either. I don't particularly CARE either way. My previous statement was made because I don't think it would be gamebreaking for me and I would like to know why other people feel that it would. I've already heard the "You are gordon freeman argument". I stated above why I don't think that particular argument leads to the conclusion that you can never have a model for gordon freeman.

There is one argument that works for me though and that's this one:

"Half Life has never had a true in game model for Gordon Freeman and it's sold millions of copies. Why start now?"

Indeed why start now? Well if you slap a portal gun in his hands...you could make the argument that you now need a model for him. Unless of course valve decides not to show him through the portals...which would be fine by me too. Show him, don't show him, works either way. (for me)

Its hard to tell what the Portal gun could do to the HL series, as there might be a different environment in HL3 and it might compliment or destroy the gun all together. I say maybe.

This is why you don't understand. Because you have to try and comprehend it. If you don't understand, then you won't know the answer. You just have to accept it. Not for my sake, or anyone elses. But you have to accept that the majority of true half-life fans out there have their feelings and their beliefs. It's kind've like a religion, and no-one understands religion.

Understanding and acceptance of peoples opninions are two completely different things. You said I didn't understand, I agreed. I accept other peoples opinion, I just don't necessarily agree with them. This is one of those cases.

In any event, the portal gun would be fun I think, it probably just needs to make an appearance in a limited fashion.

Please guys, get back on topic or shut the hell up.

I think the Portal gun would be pretty cool, but, as we see in Portal, it only works on certain types of metal, so, unless we venture into a test facility, I doubt we would ever be able to use it.

I figure it won't be in Gordon's possession. It will play a part in Episode3, I'm sure, but I figure it will be used against/with you in some circumstances.

That could be pretty cool if it gets used against you. I'd imagine it would be pretty difficult to program an enemy to use it intelligently though.

You will probaly have it for one level and then destroy it because its too dangerous to let it fall into the wrong hands

No...

The idea behind Portal was so poorly executed by VALVe and putting it in an environment with action, enemies, etc it just wouldn't play out.

I'm probably one of the few people here who felt that Portal was highly dissapointing...Hardly worth the hour and half of my time.

Heh, I was about to post "WTF you just said you loved Portal" when I realised that I was confusing you with -Kashmir-.

I'm really surprised to hear someone say that about Portal, care to elaborate?
