It's finally here, one of the most hyped mods is now released exclusively on Fileplanet (soon to be released everywhere). Planet Half-Life have the first review for the mod, you can read it here.

The bottom line of it all is that Portal: Prelude isn’t just a map pack, and in my eyes it can’t even be called a straight off mod. It’s a game, and it’s free. Hours upon hours of rich, challenging gameplay, beautifully crafted maps, custom content with professional-sounding dialog can all be found if you scroll down the page to the download link. I’ve played Portal map packs and I’ve played single-player Source mods, but Portal: Prelude takes the cake. Yeah, I threw in the pun, but stop wasting time, you’ll need all the time you can get to beat the game!

You can find another preview by ModDB, right here.[br]

Download the mod now from Fileplanet. (more mirrors coming soon)

awesome :D
(group events made me comment first finally <3

Hurrah! Now I just need to steal some internets so I can download this sonuvabitch.

in the fileplanet queue... hooray?

Any other places to download from?

A perfect example of why Steam supported singleplayer mods would be awsome! although it is a Fileplanet exclusive, I expect they got some advertising or some such out of it, I wasnt expecting this till tommorow anyway.

When somone gets it in, post your opinions!

This is a pretty sweet Mod and to be honest, rather taxing on the old brain. Defiantly tougher than Flash Map Pack, and the presentation is so much better. My only quibble with the game is that it seems the voice acting is well too quiet. I have turned the music off but the sound effects are still way too loud so it's hard to hear their banter but that's only a minor problem (and probably just happening to me!). :)

Does not gently ease the player into the game, rather it throws you in; Not so much of a problem considering everybody has played portal already, but whether or not someone is going to throw this mod down, because the sense of accomplishment is lacklustre (I died on Level 1 and totally stuck on Level 3), is another question.

I have a problem with section3

Stuck in the same spot, loving the hardcore focus tho.

You guys need to use the upper platform and CROUCH jump for it to actually work.

Try it and report back with results. Also, listen to what the guy says over the loudspeaker afterwards.

still not working :(

Do you just crouch-jump as you jump off the ledge, or do you stay in the crouched position for the whole duration after jumping?

I'm stuck in that part too :(

I appreciate the need for challenging maps, but better design would be to more effectively teach the player these techniques.

on the second leadge run and jump and crouch for whole jump just after hitting the ground launch another portal it is hit and miss game but it is possible to do

It helps to turn off portal funnel so you can go through the portal near the top. and the wall next to the top platform is what i used.

I've made my way to Chamber 9, and I have to say that this is anti-fun. 1/10th of a Puzzle's solve time is working out what you have to do, the other 9/10ths are wrestling the engine to make sure you're coming out of the portal the right way up or at some all to precise speed and elevation. Then there are the sections where puzzle solving is done between 17 successive quick-loads because you're not quick enough to avoid being squished or cut up by beefed up uber turrets of death. Sure Portal was too easy, but i'd much rather play something that requires you to think hard, rather than punishing you for that 0.01 second in which you didn't quite place two portals in a row whilst your hud is waving all over the shop (i.e. The way you're apparently supposed to solve Chamber 9, according to the Trailer bundled in the game.)

Yeah, I can't figure out Chamber 9. I like the two characters, but eh, some of the puzzles are definitely unenjoyably.

Meh, it turned out much worse than I thought it would. The trailer over-hyped it for me.

Basically what I think of it is what kupocake said. That and the humor really isn't that funny from what I've seen so far. The thing with "she has a nice ass" was pretty stupid and seemed like a joke only a 13 year old would put in. I mean, I have a sense of humor and I can be really immature at times, but still.

Also I know the creators are French and all, but did they really have to use a speech program to make the voices? I never noticed at first but then when I noticed, I couldn't stand it. They could have AT LEAST found some voice actors or something.

I guess I may be complaining too much, I mean, I couldn't do nearly anything they have done since I have no experience in Source coding. I really respect them for all the effort and time they have put into this.

I have ended up attempting each chamber at least three times, but, so desperate to get to the ending which is apparently epic, I've been cheating a lot. The only chambers I didn't cheat were 1 and 11. And now I'm at the eending part, and...

It's f*cking epic.

As I recently played The Trap mod for Half-Life I expected something very much in the same vibe in this, i.e. as Kupo said something that makes you think hard - too many trial and error parts in this IMO. But instead just some overly frustrating gameplay.
Meh, I'd rather play through Portal again, which was actually fun and didn't anally rape you whenever you made a mistake.

Also GlaDOS is much better and more funnier than the three jerks in this.

There's a stretch of puzzles: 10 through 18, that really get you thinking and seem a lot less harsh despite their complexities. But I'm now on the 19th Chamber and unless I'm missing something huge, it's one big pain in the butt portal jumping puzzle. Like having a hundred Residue Processings rolled up and inserted in... well, your residue processor. As for the characters, I'll be the first to commend them on choosing actors better than the average mod VA work. You heard me correct.

Even though i'm not at the end, and all huffy puffy about nasty hard puzzles that make me sad, I can say this is worth a download. Just expect pain.

I think what I did was use the lower piston thingy as a platform and got over. Either way it's definitely doable.

I'm stuck on stage 15 right now, but liking how thing is actually challenging where as portal was a run through.

Well I finally got near the end but I can't finish the game as when I get to a certain part the game slows right down and is unplayable. There are no errors in the console or anything. I tried lowering the settings but the game freezes.

Does anyone else have this problem? It's
Right where GlaDOS asks what's on the radio and she said she's going to change it to something more suitable for the situation.

The final level is a bit of a mess. HL2 really needs Opt_entdata. I've never bothered to look into it for HL2 but Opt_entdata (made by my friend fragbait0 for HL1) removed instances of static entities that are no longer needed after the compilation process. Reduced the amount of entities in a level which in turn meant better performance.

I cheated through so much of this game, and I never cheat. The puzzles were tough, but not the fun kind of tough, unreasonable and annoying, and overusing turrets..

At first I thought the voices were intentionally bizarre... but once I found out that they were not....

Anyways, it was definitely well done for a mod, but there was a lot I really disliked.

The ending was intriguing, but so much "lol... wut?"

Like the part where she wanted to pick a new song, and that one song just kept replaying over and over whenever you were fighting GLaDOS, it had like.... one line, "I WANTED TO BELIEVE!"

Yeah, really fitting GLaDOS.

The very end was really confusing with the random unknown lady grabbing you, but somehow not getting vaporized. I also really disliked the manhacks.

After finishing it I gotta say that it was a bit much. Some of the puzzles (like people have said) were hard to work out, but working them out wasn't the tough bit, it was the almost 1 in a million timing you had to have with some of them otherwise you would have to re-load and try again. The amount of turrets in a room I thought was a bit lame and a really lazy ass way to make a room harder. As I said earlier, I couldn't hear much of the voice acting 'cause the sound effects were louder, but from what I did hear they sounded like a very monotone computer (even though they are meant to be human) and their dialogue is childish to say the least. Plus I was surprised and thought it was unnecessary the amount of times they say "F**K" in the game. In a nut shell it’s a hard version of Portal with a mediocre story. Sure it’s frustrating and at some times pointlessly hard but never the less it’s defiantly worth the download.

The monotone voices became attrocious at the end.
Monotone Voice: "Can't you see we are having a meeting here. Get the f*ck out of here."
*scientist awkwardly raises hands in the air* "Do not touch this."

Did anyone else just skip level 18 by standing on the button at the exit and firing through the door?

You could do that, but you need the companion cube at the end of level 19.

The Chemical Brothers - Believe.
A song they didn't have a license for I bet
