Of course this doesn't actually mean ANYTHING, but it confirms what people were saying in some ways.

Jesus, it is so hard to understand that HL2 has been delayed.

They added 200Mbps to be able to keep up with the demand of offering the HL2 Benchmark on the 30th September and not the final game!

There's something I hadn't considered...if we don't get the game on the 30th at least we'll have the benchmark :)

Yes, the benchmark would be cool. Well, the entire game would be cool, but I am quickly losing faith in that happening.

Benchmark will be distributed to the press on the 30th, NOT the public. I can't put enough emphasis on PRESS. Unless you're a member of the press (with proof) forget about downloading any benchmark on the 30th.

They don't. The benchmark program is being released to the press on the 30th. The benchmarks before weren't the benchmark program, just results of it.

i guess that'll hold me until its released, but we peeps better let gabe know were COUNTING ON HIM, as in gimme on 30th or you die! lol ;)

If it does or does not come out , Gabe or whoever at Valve must come out and s ay something , anything. All he has to say is that if its coming out or not. put us at rest Gabe yeesh....

At a press event held today in Seattle, Valve's Gabe Newell outlined the benchmark features integrated in Half-Life 2 and provided performance numbers comparing how the game will perform on various graphics cards. Newell endorsed ATI's graphics cards, which perform significantly better in the game, according to the provided performance scores. He also announced that the standalone Half-Life 2 benchmark will be publicly available on September 30.

In yo face!

The press hasn't received the benchmarks. They've been allowed to test it at the ATI/Valve presentation, nothing more.

dude a bunch of sites have the benchmark already , Anandtech and a few others...

I'd say we have reason to be pissed if they announce a delay now...don't ya think? A bigger heads up would've been better

on gabes actual slide it said "benchmark available to you september 30th" "you" being the press guys at the thing......

[edit]

no, none of the websites have the benchmark, despite how much you want them to have it, which would make the 30th a public release.

anand and all the other sites were at the ati event, they were only allowed to test at the event using ati/valve provided hardware, on the 30th the sites will get the benchmark and basically be allowed to test it on any hardware.

I tire of ignorance...go away unless you have proof...my quote had proof...nothing you've provided so far has any

hey at least its something... Imagine they announce a delay september 30th... but you're right.... them not saying anything still gives us some hope..

Then why did the news quote I posted say otherwise? It says public , not press. Tork is right...Anandtech and many other sites have had access to the benchmark now for awhile.

Totally. They know we are sitting here like a bunch of schoolgirls just waiting for hl2.
I dont think Gabe is that cruel

Apparently, you're not very good at deciphering the difference between ignorance and fact.

Anandtech

Valve had very strict requirements about the test systems they let us use. The systems were only allowed to use publicly available drivers and thus, we used NVIDIA's Detonator 45.23s and ATI's Catalyst 3.7s, both publicly available from the respective websites.

Beyond3D

ATI and Valve had a number of machines, all with the same base hardware configuration that Valve’s own benchmarks were taken on so we could do our own testing. However, because of the length of time it took to render the benchmark on some of the slower boards had we just done our own testing we wouldn’t have had many results due to time constraints. In order to get a wider variety of data points we shared our results with Lars from Tomshardware, Brandon from FiringSquad and Bob from Gamespot. Even Though we grouped together to get a number of different sets of data, much of it is still somewhat sparse and we’ll do some more complete testing once we have the full benchmark.

Need I go on?

What news site is that anyway?

I'll go on, just incase you want to keep beating the dead horse.

TomsHardware:

After the surprisingly hard critics from Valve´s Gabe Newell on NVIDIA yesterday, the press today got the chance to get our own performance numbers in Halflife 2. Within the scope of ATI´s Shader Day event we were allowed to test on four machines that were provided by ATI. In the meantime, we also received an official statement from NVIDIA on the situation.

FiringSquad

But there was one task remaining for Shader Day attendees: hands-on benchmarking with Half-Life 2!

Please don't call me ignorant.

Yea but it's going to be leaked, so it's the same thing basically. :p
Hoping for a HL2 release instead of resorting to a benchmark, however.

At Tom's Hardware you can see the computers they used at Shader Day to run the benchmark. It also says: "What we did not like was the very limited time of only 90 minutes for the test runs." If the press had the benchmarks themselves, they would have had all the time in the world.

Also, this article has the slide saying "Available to you(speaking to the press) September 30th."

Ok...Well maybe they don't "have" the benchmark but they have seen it and given us some numbers based off of that benchmark... isn't that good enough?...or maybe you can nit pick every little word we say cause you really care that much... All I know is that Gabe said the benchmark would be availible to the public on the 30th... does that mean the Press or the "Public" I don't know... I bet you can find an article from some website describing the world Public...why don't you post that here too...

please quote gabe and give a source, as you saw, gabes own slide at the event said available to you (meaning the hardware review sites), on september 30th.

i care about seeing it run on my rig. I want to see it in real time , not just numbers or screenshots or videos, i really could care less how it runs on there rigs. I have a faster FSB and overclocked Videocard and id like to see how it does..

Gabe Newell, Valve's founder and managing director, did note that the Half-Life 2 benchmark program will be included in the box when the software does ship and that it will be distributed to the press on September 30......
