I got this new program called Fences by the people at Stardock, and it's pretty awesome. Up until now, I've never seen an effort to modernize the Windows desktop.

I should have made myself more clear. I'm talking about the actual desktop icons, not the task bar or anything at the bottom. I know there have been docking applications and all, but I'm really pleased with this Fences application, because it turned my desktop mess into something really pretty!

The 3d desktop where every icon is a 3d object with physics is just one I can think of off hand. And that is over 2 years old. I know there have been plenty, dealing with the icons themselves yes I understood you the first time.

I disabled my desktop icons because it's too cluttered at the moment.

I still have yet to get in the habit of proper desktop management. Wish I had some widgets where I could put my shit and it would like pop out the side of the screen like a tray.

Raz, get Fences. It automatically organizes all your desktop items and places them into little boxes with scrolling bars. Also, you can double click to the desktop to hide everything and make it look bare like you do now.

Irritatingly, I can't work out how to make my desktop icons change their font colour to black so that I could see them as long as they weren't at the bottom of the screen - or, better yet, give them black outlines with white writing inside.

Sulk, you've probably turned off the text shadow. You can turn that back on, or another way I know of - you can use a powertoy application called 'clear type tuner', to add an outline around the text:

EDIT: I remember how to turn on 'text shadow' now. Right click 'My Computer', click 'properties', click the 'Advanced' tab at the top, then click on 'Settings' under the performance area. Tick the box 'use drop shadows for icons on the desktop'.
