I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread where people post their system information in relation to how well HL2 (Deathmatch or single player, preferabbly deathmatch though since this is the DM forum after all) performs.. I'm mainly posting this out of curiosity, and, more importantly, to find out how desperate I'm in need of an upgrade.

When posting, try to include as much information as you can. For those of you who don't know this information, you can simply go to "Run" in the Start Menu and type in dxdiag, which should show you an adequate amount of system information. Otherwise, just look in the hardware manuals or on the hardware boxes.

System Information

  • Internet Connection: Cable (About 225kbps down)
  • Memory: 384MB RAM (Not DDR)
  • Video Card: Elsa Gladiac 920 (Nvidia GeForce 3 Core, DirectX 8.0 Max, 64MB)
  • 120GB + 20GB harddrives
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte P4 Titan (Socket 478, 400 MHz FSB)
  • Sound Card: Onboard Sound
  • Mouse & Keyboard: Logitech Wireless Mouse & Keyboard

For me, Half Life 2 runs surprisingly well for my system specs.. although it starts to slow down when my resolution is at 800x600, so most of the time I just play at 640x480. I usually only experience choppy movement when I'm playing in a wide open area with a lot of people.

All of my advanced video settings are on low, even though it's recommended that I have most of them on medium. When I play single player, the load times are unbearable.. the CG scenes operate pretty well, and I only experience slowdown occasionaly.

-P4 2.8ghz
-512mb DDR
-140+80GB Hard drive (don't know RPM)
-GeForce FX5500 128
-other crap

Stable 60FPS (capped at 65) on 800x600 and mostly high settings (except AA and model detail)
Between 35 and 135 ping.
Only slight stuttering after level load.

It runs good enough for me :)

EDIT: Oops, forgot my net connection.

Cable, 3MB down 1MB up.

You have all of that and you're only running at a 800x600 resolution? o_O...

I still don't understand why my computer can run this game at all.. of course, my video card was specifically designed for graphic intensive games.

Lowest settings in HL2DM - 60+fps.

Specs are in the sig....

I run it as 1680x1050 (16:10 widescreen) on highest everything, with 2x AA and 2x AF. I get around 40-60 fps mainly because my FPS is capped at 60, due to my LCD VSYNC being at 60. Because it's an LCD, it doesn't have the same effect on your eyes as a CRT refresh rate seems to have.

O yea for net, I cant remember the down/up rates, but I get nice low pings often. Sits around 20-60 if i find a nice server.

FPS jumps from 60-150 I guess, could cap it to 75 so its smooth. Works fine

P4 2.53 GHz
768 MB DDR DIMM RAM
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
Cable (Usually get between 500-800 down)

I am on 1280x960 with everything high. (2x AA: 2x AF) I get about 30-50 FPS, but FPS doesn't bother me, so if I get 15-20 FPS I am fine. :D

1024x768 4xAA 8xAF all on high, reflect world. Good, but drops in open areas sometimes below 30FPS. GREAT for CSS, as maps are small...no long open areas really.

Abit NF7-S Nforce 2 motherboard
1 GB dual-channel DDR RAM
AMD 2800+ Barton Processor
ATI 9700 PRO video card
2 seagate 7200 RPM 8MB buffer hard drives

Single Player:
I run at 1024x768, with everything but textures maxed. I keep the textures at "trilinear" because to be honest I can't tell a difference when I go any higher. Game runs very smooth.

Deathmatch:
It gets kinda crazy so I had to tone back the AA to 2x. Runs smooth though.

p4 2.6ghz with HT
512mg RAM
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128mg
Broadband (Cable) connection
1024x768

SP runs fine on everything medium, as does MP.

P4 3.40G
6800GT
160GB SATA Drive
1280x1024-Reconmanded Settings
Other shit.

AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512 MB DDR Ram
Ati Radeon 9600 Pro
4.1 Surround Sound
80 GB HD
And my i-net simply owns u all i'm afraid,
Glassfiber connection 100 Mbit, so 10 MB/sec effective download, 3 MB/s up. Ping usually 10-20. Even had steady ping of 6 once.

Run HL2 smooth with everything on High, no AA and AF, at 1024*786. Loading kills me though.

How about multiplayer HL2DM?

*Takes out big box*
Let's see...
-3.0 Ghz Hyperthreading
-512 MB RAM FSB 800 Mhz
-An ATI Radeon 9600 PRO 128MB (Used to be 9800 XT but that one broke down ;( )
-WLAN 802.11g (54Mb/s)
-Pioneer DVD/CD Writer (Dunno the exact name)
-SONY DVD-ROM 16X
-Seagate HD 160GB
-Stereo TV / FM-Tuner card
-7X USB 2.0
-2X Firewire
-Dolby Digital Surround Sound 6 Channels
-Networkcard 100Mb
-56K V.9x PCI Data Fax Modem
-5 Card Readers (SD/MMC - CF - SM - MS)

Aaand thats about it.

And the revelation : HL2 went like shit the first time I ran it, I had to play it on 640X480 to have everything on high except AA and only Trilinear filtering. Then I reformatted the computer, did like 10 defragmentations and FINALLY it went decent on 800X600 with everything highest. (For some reason my computer screen goes really weird when on 1024X768.)

The end

Oh sh*t, internet connection :p
That would be 6 Mb down (OMGOMGOMG) and 172KB up (Oh yey.)

Now...
P4 2.2GHz
Intel D875PBZ
1GB RAM PC-3200
FSB: 533MHz
6800 GT

4 Days from the time of this writing (this hardware is in pieces on the bench now)...
P4 3.4GHz HT
Intel D925XCV
512MB RAM PC-6400
FSB: 800MHz
X800XL (PCI-e)

Now runs HL2 (single player) like BUTTA at 1920x1200 with settings maxed out. Hopefully my new system will perform similarly. :dozey:

I have pretty much similiar specs as some of you but for some reason its not running well for me.

Let me first say its a notebook compaq presario x6000
specs..
2.8 HT P4
System bus-800MHz fsb
512 MB Ram
60GB HD 4200 rpm
Ati radeon mobility x600 pcix 128MB
17 " Widescreen

The game is sometimes playable. Most of the time I get drop in fps. ITs weird..from 60-50-60-40-20-18-11. I asked some other players on some servers and they were getting the same. This happens while playing cs too but not as much. Ive tried various tweaks and it still does not work right..im not sure whats wrong..any ideas?

ray_MAN, how can you be happy with 15-20 FPS?? You should have a minimum of 24-25, as that is the same framerate of TV and movies, and will appear smooth to human conception :)

System Information

  • Internet Connection: DSL
  • Memory: 512MB RAM
  • 1.8 GHz
  • 37.2 GB Hard Drive
  • Mouse & Keyboard: Logitech Mouse Broke, Stuck With KEIO Mouse and 4+ Year Old Keyboard.
  • Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX420

I run at the lowest settings for everything, except in Model and Texture Detail. For those, I use Medium. It runs about 60 FPS most of the time, but in major battles and such, it can decrease all the way down to 20 FPS. The lag is good in a few servers, but 71+ is too laggy. Heck, I can't even do the Grenade Launch without letting the Grenade touch the ground if I have lag around 84+.

My specs are as per my sig, as well as
Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 Mobo, + onboard 7.1 sound,
Logitech X-530 speakers,
some crappy old CRT at 72hz,
MX1000 mouse,
Logitech media keyboard,
80gb IDE drive.
Also, the CPU's slightly OCed to 210mhz FSB, about 2.3 ghz clockspeed.

With this, I can run HL2 at 1024x768(highest my monitor allows), with all details on highest :p, 4xAA, and 8xAF. I only have a very occasional noticable blip in frame rates, I don't know what the FPS actually is though.

Setup:
  • P4 2.6GHz 800Mhz
  • 1GB RAM PC3200 in Dual-DDR configuration
  • Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
  • Steam and WinXP (SP2) on a 74.5GB 10.000 Raptor disc.
  • Catalyst 5.5 installed.
  • 2048/448 ADSL (shared with 3 other PCs :()
Play HL2DM with 1024x768, all very low and blurred. No AA or AF (settings not low for FPS reasons as they help very little in that aspect).

And with this connection it works ok when the others aren't using it :( But I always get between 75 to 100 ping on most EU servers. The best I've had is 45-50 on norwegian servers. I live very far north in Norway, and the routing totally blows :/

Since when did 24-25FPS appear smoth to human conpection for games? No offence, but that's just plain wrong ;) If it does to you, you seriously need to check your eyes or maybe brain :)

The reason it feels smooth for movies is that the frames in movies aren't clear cut like in games. They capture the movement for an entire 1/24th of a second, not what happens at the exact point of when each 1/24th of a second start like a frame in games. The shuttertime for each frame in a movie is much higher than for frames in a game. For a game it captures only what is happening exactly at the time it's taken, for a movie it's open for a while. Movie frames are not very clear, but the percieved quality when the movie runs is very clear (if intended) unlike with games where each frame is perfectly clear (unless some effect makes them otherwise) and so is it when they "move".

And what seems smooth is all about how it's presented and what the content is and where on the (human)eye it's captured. There is no straight forward answer to it. You should read this article about it. Very interesting.
