postergirl for Capital punishment!

Bloody hell I dont see what the problem is with eating on the platform anyway :\.

"If she had stopped eating, it would have been the end of it and if she had just stopped for the issuance of a citation, she never would have been locked up," Transit Police Chief Polly Hanson said Thursday.

Wow...how can a cop actually say that with a straight face?

"In 2000, a police officer handcuffed a 12-year-old girl for eating a french fry on a subway platform.

In 2002, one of their officers ticketed a wheelchair-bound cerebral palsy patient for cursing when he was unable to find a working elevator to leave a station."

it's a police state ..just like the combine but with suckier uniforms

I love authority figures who get an ego the size of Mars. Oh wait, no I don't.

IMHO they should have pistol whipped her ;)

I'll never eat outside of my house again. At least not when I go to America anyway. That's crazy!

I was absolutely shocked by the latter. Why the **** do they have to cuff everyone? These are probably nut-job cops on a power trip. They'll probably squeem out with the 'upholding the law' defense.

Yeah that old trick..."I was only obeying the law yur honory" I've seen people taken down and arrested for small things such as murder because of the Law. It makes me sick.

In seriousness...Perhaps they were being a bit over zealous but can you really blame a person for doing what the law commands?

Yes, you can Farrow. Like cuffing a 12 year old for having a fry, ticketing the palsy victim for cussing about being trapped? I mean Jesus! The cop woulda ****ing cuffed the palsy guy if he could!!

It's just being an asshole cop and allowing no exceptions. If a kid (think 7 years old) ran across an empty street to see his parents, a 'true' and 'over zealous' cop would get him for J-walking.

I'm not so pissed about the first lady. And she didn't show ID when told to. I can uderstand her arrest.

[SARCASM]Stalinist Russia was good because it was a police state, and all the cops were good :E[/SARCASM]

Why couldn't she show her ID? Yes, arresting her was too much, but she could have listened and saved herself all of that time. She has no right to complain if there was an easy and obvious solution to her problem.

Have you guys ever been on the subway in DC? Everywhere you see signs that read:

Please don't eat, drink, smoke or litter on Metro vehicles or in the stations. Metro Transit Police issue citations or make arrests to enforce the law.

If you are hungry, go up to the streets and eat a Snickers or something. This is the law, if you obey it nothing bad will happen. Take some initiative an be responsible.

Police state, LOL!

Lot's of police officers like to go on power trips, but still, they have nothing on the customs agents working the Peace Bridge.

Land of the free, home of the brave.

God bless America!

1984 anyone?

I can't believe this, you guys are making a big deal out of nothing.

Freedom to do what we tell you - Bill Hicks

seems a little overzealous of those coppers. mainly this comes out of fear though, so you can forgive them i guess. but was the woman such a cow that she wouldn't stop to show some id? sheesh. could've diffused the whole situation.

I don't get it.

The rules were clearly posted. She knew the rules. The transit police told her it was illegal. She refused to give ID when requested for it. She got arrested.

What is so wrong with that? Especially the last part about refusing to give identification over to the police. If you really think its a wrong to follow that rule, go to your local government and complain. Don't break the law and cry foul. That is wrong.

ahhh I've narrowed you down to either southern ontario or upstate new york ...am I right?

Honestly, this is strange, but nothing to worry about. It doesn't mean America is screwed up, it just means that some police officers had a power trip. A lot of police officers that are new to their job act that way. A new highway patroller will bust you for going 66 Mph instead of 65. It's just a power thing. When they become more experienced, they let things slide. (General rule.)

if someone is going to cuff and detain you...You generally humour them even if you don't feel like it.

I wouldn't, I'd happily spend a night in jail if a Cop was being an arse, simply to expose the idiocracy in the system.

The cop had a legitimate reason for doing it, but in practicality it was a bit much what he did.

I'm sure even his superiors are angry about it, too. Even if the media didn't cover it at all, it still costs them money and is a waste of time / resources. He'll probably get disciplined (probably not FIRED, but you know. Some common sense)

He was right to warn her. He SHOULD'VE ticketed or given her a citation after she refused to show ID.
