Quick question.

After playing the FEAR demo it's clear the ole Radeon 9500 pro has lost it's "ooomph"

Seeing some good prices for the 6800gt (and about all I can afford right now), the question is what would be a reasonable Power supply (as in watts)?

I have a 300watt Antec but clearly that's not gonna cut it anymore, either.

I will be sticking with names brands, but more interesting in people's experiences with different watt levels.

400 good enough?

500 over kill?

Not running a lot of stuff and not overclocking severely so this is more about the 6800Gt.

Thanks in advance!

You do have a good brand 300Watt. Might work with what you have.
What CPU do you have and how much memory? 1 harddrive?

400-500Watts would be good for lasting value, considering upgrades or add-ons (Harddrives etc).

^what he said would be the best idea, but 500 wouldnt be "overkill", it would be a good investment

FYI the new DFI boards and SLI configurations are getting up there (needs 500Watts+) just to show ya where we are heading. :x

Right now I have:

ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo
Athlon xp 3200+
1gig Muskin Ram (PC-3200)
2 hard drives (one is SATA)
1 DVD burner

Yeah, really I should dump a bit more cash into it and make it a bit more future proof rather than having to face buying another PS in the near future when the mobo/cpu get replaced.

500 watts+ it shall be.

Thanks guys.

i got enermax 485W, which i run A64 and 6800gt off, and iexpect it to last me for some time. Power consumption surely wont just keep going up and up.

i got 1 gb of ram a 2800 overclocked to 2.37, 2 hard drives, and a dvd burner + a 5700. My 450 watt peice of shit sometimes shuts off my comp when it gets hot.

i have nvidia evga geforce 6800 gt 256 mb and it says in the manual u need at least 400 watt power supply no matter what but i dunno coz i had 580 power supply for 1 year and it overheated / blew up so i am getting a 550 aspire power supply so i would say over 500 power supply for future upgrades.

Oh and also i heard in alot of review dat Thermaltake power supplies bloew up in about a year.....

A period now and again makes reading multiple line entires a lot easier :).

Anyway, I'd suggest at least a 400w Someone. My Thermaltake PurePower 420w powered my 6800 regular fine, and it was only $36. I sold that card though, use my laptop more now.

480w minimum I would say. 300w just doesn’t cut it these days, and when you start upgrading, you will be glad you have a 480w+ power supply, but make sure you purchase a name-brand, high quality PSU. Cheapies won’t slice the cake, I’m afraid. I would honestly say a solid PSU is $80.00 and up, but that is just my personal opinion. And if you are wondering why, you don’t want all of your components (at least a majority of them) being rendered useless because of a simple mistake of purchasing a faulty PSU, it just isn’t worth it IMO. High quality, or no quality.

I agree, 80$ for a PSU. I also tend to aim for that range. My fortron 500Watt was about 80$ and my Enermax 420Watt that I bought a year or so back was about that as well.

lol i have a 250 watt... and i hav an x800xl and it runs with 2 harddrives lol
