preview of Windows 7 RC1

A lot of side MS apps are not included on install (mail, messenger, movie maker). They are part of the Windows Live Essentials pack I guess.
Right, and that's a good thing. I hate having to uninstall all that bloated crap like messenger. Now you have to download it from Updates if you want it.

This is also to help MS with piracy as you need a 'legit' key to download stuff like that.

Sounds like they are keeping the install really trim. Lean and fast.

Yeah. Hopefully they do a little bit more (they say they will) since it will get installed on netbooks.

I'm pretty optimistic about this review. I'm one of the XP diehards and I'm glad I never switched to Vista. 2010 might be a good year for me to do that ...

Anyone got any idea on whether the com-regognition is working better in win 7? In vista, espicially under wmware I've had lots of problems with MCU's not being regognised

That's one reason, and the other is to allow the developers of the mail, messengers, movie maker, etc apps work on their own timetable, instead of being stuck with whatever the Win7 timetable is.

It also provides less reasons for people to cry-foul on anti-trust (ie, AOL couldn't complain that Windows 7 has its own messaging client built in).

I've been running Win7 ever since Milestone 2 days, and it's come a long way. I will be updating all of my machines once it goes RTM!

Anyone actually got this up and running yet ? Thoughts ?

Still need to get round to buying another hard drive to install this on. Have the burned dvd ready and waiting. Sounds like it could be quite good.

:)

I've got the 64 bit version of Win 7 RC1 running and it's great. I've not had a single crash or incompatibility issue yet. Performance is slightly better than Vista, I've noticed certain applications are more responsive although that may be because it's a clean install. Overall it's pretty solid and i'm using it as my primary OS now.

Just installed win 7 on my HP nc4000, old laptop, made in 2004 or something. With only 1gb of ram the os seems to run as good as xp and hilbernate is way faster. Only negative thing I noticed during my first tries was that win 7 wouldn't detect the wlan. But after pluging in the ethernet and running windows update, everything was fine.

I booted it on my laptop, and I rather like it. I have never switched to Vista from XP, and Windows 7 looks looks like my new main OS.

Good to hear that a few of you are having good experiences. I'll be installing it soon. My only worry is finding decent 64bit drivers for my aging socket 939 hardware. I too haven't upgraded from XP yet, so i'm looking forward to running this alongside it.

That should be able to tell you of any incompatibilities that you may get from moving to Win7.

Personally what I would encourage people to do is set up a small partition on their HDD and then see how Win7 works. If you like it and your hardware works and key software works, wipe and install!

I wish MS could come up with some sort of Live CD of Windows so people can try Windows without actually fully upgrading. And no, a VM doesn't really count due to performance.
