Prey Videos - 1998

98....wow.

Why'd it dissappear all of a sudden? I'm sure that's been asked and answered many times...

Those are actually the first gameplay videos I've ever seen of the old Prey. In fact, I've never even seen gameplay screenshots. All I can remember is seeing screenshots of some of the maps in a very old issue of PC Gamer.

wow. really nice, but the i am sure the new one is more better than this

It was the room with the lava waterfall right? ;)

I have that issue too! It had a preview of Half-Life on the old (or less optimised) engine aswell.

Edit - Cool trailer, I can actually imagine it being pretty innovative back then. Infact, it looks much more appealing than the now version... =/

Now all we need is Duke Nuke Forever :D

Interesting stuff. Thx for the links.

Whoah, that looked AWESOME :O Way moer interesting than what they have now, I think. The hyper-realisitc room or whatever he called it, looks like today's kinds of graphics. Just totally cool.

The animations were kinda jumpy though. And was anybody else like, "turn your mouse sensitivity down!" :x

I have to say, for 1998, that is incredibly impressive. I don't think most games even reached that level of detail or interactivity until several years later.

I'm sure that by the time this engine and game were complete, many games would have been on the same graphical level.

The sad thing is that it looks better (gameplay wise) than the Prey that just got released, judging from the demo that was released a few weeks ago.

Dynamic portals, destructable environments. What the hell happened to this game? Maybe FPS's nowadays don't have the same kind of talent making them.

It probably would've generated alot more interest and sold better if they'd have just released the damn thing back then. Now it's just another FPS with some cool gravity and portal tricks. Not saying it's not a good game, just not as innovative as it would have been 8 years ago.

1998... hey, it could've gone up against Half-Life :O

that looks sooooooooo much more fun than the current prey. The game just went down the tubes completley. I would have loved to play that game in 1998.

I'd like to get my hands on the 98 version of this game, looks fun as hell.

btw, the interviewer on that video was dorky as f**k.

I think most people involved in games during that time were dorky :p

God, how many times do I have to post this: http://www.apogeegames.com/prey/history.htm

Thats what happened to the old Prey.
I don't have time to read that whole thing, but does it say why the portal grenades were removed? That was a terrible decision, now they're getting slapped in the face by Valve with Portal, which shows the insane possibilites of dynamic portals. Now if they implement it into Prey 2 it will be slated as a ripoff.

:| Fine, short version, 3drealms is cursed, which resulted in two complete Prey dev teams leaving the project(The first time the whole team except for the engine programmer left to join/form new companies. The second time the project leader and engine programmer left, then the rest of the team trickled out joining either the DNF team or other companies. Some of the places the devs left to/founded include Ion Storm(founded), Ritual, Valve, and Gearbox(founded)) 3dr met Humanhead around 2001 and let them take the project, giving them near complete freedom, as long as they kept a few elements (Portals, story, and a few other things) and then just watched over the project.

Sad news...that game, like everyone else has said, would've been killer. Anyone see the dynamic shadow with the ceiling fan?

Imagine all the mods that could've been!
