Seriously i think that Video cards are way over priced. U can get 2.5ghz of power from a processor for $150, or u can get only 256mbs of power from a video card and pay $400+ doesnt make much sense does it. Thats like 100x less power for 3x the price. They need to start busting their balls on video careds because processors are a little to overpowerd atm, dont u think

Sorry i put this in my other thread but people hate it and its dieing Lolz

it's not only about the megahertz...the engineering that goes into a GPU is just as strenuous as that behind a CPU. GPUs have many times more transistors than CPUs too, I believe...although I can't remember the ballpark numbers off the top of my head...

EDIT: Basically, it is impossible to use the same technology in video cards as in cpus...if you tried to get comparable speeds, you would fry the card in absolutely no time... Long story, short...video cards are not overpriced for the amount of work that goes into them...it's a very competitive industry as you can see...

EDIT2: I know what he said...but I approached it as if he was actually comparing apples to apples (mhz to mhz).

So if a Video card was 2.5 ghz, does that = real life.............Then what? Armeggedon???? And the human race has to start over

spam. :upstare:

.... are u retarded??

how the hell can u compare the clock speed of a CPU to the amount of RAM on a graphics card.... wtf?!

This kind of post is completely unnecessary. Point him to some information why don't you?

I am just pointing out the difference in speeds, and how far they are from each other yet the price is teh same or higher.

see my above post...

just like cpus, its good to buy a vid card with all the features, and then overclock that baby and put $100 more worth on it.

anyone remember the radeon 9500s, lotta people were flashing their bios, overclocking, turning them into 9700 pros. great stuff

Could someone do like a pir graph or something about what part does what to play a game. This is what i imagine
60% Processor, Calculations for physics etc. Drawing triangles, events
30% APG Videocard. Drawing skins, coloring the models, Sending info to screen, showing blood u know, Artistic stuff
5% RAM. Just having info ready so it doesnt need to touch harddrive
5% Motherboard and BUS doing what they do best, running everything

SO where am i wrong

A Radeon 9800 pro has ~110 million transistors and 128MB of dedicated memory for $400. The GPU clockspeed is 380MHz, while the memory is 660MHz.

A pentium 4 2.4GHz chip has 50 million transistors and only 512KB of dedicated memory for the cache. They go for around $160.

If you considered only the transistor ratio, the Radeon should be twice the price of the P4 or $320. Then take into account 128MB of high speed memory, and I consider it a deal. Add in all the rest of the card such as the video outputs and the power pathway, and now the P4 looks like the overpriced part.

Nice post thanks

Coolio, the comparison you made is analagous to saying 'Well, a car goes at 60 mph but a plane flies at 60,000 feet, so a plane is obviously 1000x better, roxorz.'

5% ram? heh.

It's more like
30% cpu
30% ram
30% video card
10% whatever else.

CPU/RAM/video card are the main things you need for games mostly, i would never skimp on any of these.

I for one agree that videocards are overpriced.
I mean, if i buy a well preforming card it could cost me 250 euro.
and even 350 for the ati9800.

I mean, wtf, i could buy 400 breads for that and live 2 years on it.

What the voodoo2 or tnt2 ever this badly priced? i seriousely doubt that.

/me feels milked

As inappropriate this thread is, it should at least be phased to "Hardware" forum.

yep, and if you wanted a SLI setup you had to buy two V2s.

Also, GPUs are specialized hardware, they are built to process graphics and graphics only hence they have a lot of on chip solutions to help them excel in it i.e T&L unit, Pixel and Vertex Shader processing etc. also things like FSAA and FA are all hardware based.
All those on chip toys complicate them far beyond any general purpose CPU which translates into a higher price.

and this people, is not a computer engineer.

on the other hand i am, and graphics cards a shit load cheaper than they were even just 2-3 years ago.

it's all about demand...if gfx card companies can't sell cards they:

a: go out of business
b: lower the prices

if they're making money and selling cards, then they're not overpriced from a business viewpoint, right?

my guess is you're just mad you can't afford the one you want...which is understandable. trust me, they're worth what you pay in relation to the cost of the other components in your system. a graphics card is just as important as a CPU now...it's an integral part of any gaming rig...whereas it used to be just an "accelerator"
