Prison Break is a new custom single-player map for HL2, featuring custom content, animations and dialogue. Obviously enough, the objective is to escape your chains and take the fight to your oppressors, with the help of a few fellow prisoners and lots of guns.[br]

[br]Having been recommended this by a friend, I'm taking it on good faith it's worth playing. You can download Prison Break by clicking here - extract it to your maps folder to install and then access it through the game console. Any comments or suggestions? E-mail [email protected].
 
omg. bad picture quality and where is the lighting ?

LOL - this is not for graphics whores :)
its the gameplay and as we all know space invader > quake 4/gameplay > graphics
I highly recommend this map - it really is up there with Minerva in terms of singleplayer maps for Halflife 2 in terms of pure fun

Looks good. The layout looks sweet. I'll be giving this a download.

But what's the storyline?
 
Yes, the art for the map isn't great, especially the lighting. I'm a designer by trade, so I create a block mesh, get the gameplay I want, and then hand it off to someone to 'pretty up'.

I plan on doing one more pass after gathering feedback to polish it. Maybe by that time, some talented, bored artist out there will ask to help out? Who knows...

Just played it, got stutter for the first time towards the end, so I never got to the dropship, but I assume thats the end. Good stuff though, I enjoyed it.

hmm there is no custum content unless they are embedded in the bsp, but the filesize is to small for that :)

The action was pretty intense
Some sequences were amusing (I found the things they say to Gordon pretty funny)
The scripts were pretty nice, and the body language of the rebels was well done.
The music was well placed also.

I think this was very fun, not hl2 quality, but a good 8/10.
 
What a crappy screenshot quality.
And I didnt see anything custom aswell.
 
Was fun. Art design was poor, but the gameplay was great fun. 7/10

And your point is? Do you really need custom content to make a game fun? OK here's a custom box model, now is the mod good enough for you?

to be far stOlve you are way out of line and you clearly didnt bother playing it
It was a hellalotta fun, bloody intense and really atmospheric and immersive
the screenshots dont really capture how nice some of the areas looked

If you havent played it you should - it really is a long overdue piece of quality gaming, much much better than some of the so called mods that litter the news page
kudos to jesterhole on his first released map - i've already played it three times and still enjoy it immensely
 
The custom bits are dialogue and animations and stuff that doesn't show up in screenshots.

It was freaking awesome when I got to kill Breen :D
 
I liked it :P

Definately better than some of the other SP's released recently.
 
I reloaded the Breen part at least 30 times just to see the sequence fully the first time and then just to keep hear him say. "OH SHIT", that and just nailing him in the head is fun.
 
I'm having serious problems in Prison Break2, the game just gets stuck all the time and I'm forced to shut it down from the task manager...

It starts the the small shack after you jump from the hole in the wall... :(

Mine crashes in exactly the same spot, right after I jump through the hole in the wall.

Great gameplay up to that point.

The creater of this map and the guy who did the Wivenhoe mod would make one hell of a team IMO :)
 
come to think of it i think i crashed in the exact same spot :P
thought it was just my computer and just loaded it up again
 
Yeah guys, the map was crashing on me as well. I tried to debug as best I could, but there really isn't a lot of help for random freezing crashes. In the end, I was hoping it was a local problem. Guess not. Still, it was either put it out or throw it away, and I couldn't bear to do that.

You should be able to load up your save game and finish the map if you like.

PrisonBreak2 is the second half of the map, to whoever asked. It starts in the Warden's (Breen) office, and takes you all the way to the dropship.

Since it's gotten a lot of good reviews, I'm sure I'll ending up doing a final pass, especially on the art and lighting. Hopefully by that time some better debugging tools will be available.
 
I got stuck straight after the prison break. Killed all the guards (then the reinforcements), let the zombies out... nothing else happens or works.

I've seen that bug before Mess, perhaps 1 out of 50 times I played the map. Not sure what is going on there. Basically, I have a counter for all the prison guards and then the combine soldiers. Somehow, the counter isn't reaching it's max. I'm not sure if all the guys don't spawn, or if they die in a manner that doesn't allow them to report it to the counter. I never could figure it out, though I tried damn hard to.

If you start the map over, it should work. Sorry, but I don't know of a better way to fix the problem. Oh, and try letting the zombies out when the combine arrive...that's always good fun. =)

when I commented I commented on what I saw, since I didn't care to play it.
Low quality (jpg wise, not as in "the maps are ugly") screenshots doesn't apply to me.
and I didn't know if the custom content was suppose to be leveldesign content, as textures and props, which they aren't.
 
Hehe, no worries stOlve! I really hope you choose to play it at some point, since I think most HL2 fans will enjoy it.
 
I got a few suggestions:

  • You have Metrocop elites using SMGs instead of the Combine Pulse Rifle. Either use a different Metrocop or give them pulse rifles, otherwise you hear the pulse ball firing sound go off but nothing happens.
  • There are a few parts where there's visible clipping (such as a door clipping through a wall). These could be easily fixed.
  • Breen's mouth doesn't move. In fact, it appears you've used sound triggers, which is a bit strange, judging how you were able to get proper mouth movements in the first map.
  • And of course, periodical freezes, but I blame the engine, not your maps, for doing that.

Fix those and maybe give some other tweaks, and you got a very good map on your hands. These maps are already good, and we need some more singleplayer after the unusual dearth of them (Only good ones so far are MINERVA and Das Robuss.)

I have no idea why Breen's mouth doesn't move. I use ambient_generic for all the dialogue in the map, and just set the character as the source entity. That got it working for the prisoners, and their lips were going, but not for Breen. I never understood why. Oh well, I plan on learning Poser this time around. Getting the timing right on those cutscenes was annoying.

I hope you count my map among the good ones like Minerva and DR. Those maps were put together very well. I knew I wasn't going to compete in terms of art and overall layout with those maps, so I focused on just pure gameplay, and tried very hard to provide immersion and give things a sense of context. Hope it worked =)

And yes, my next effort should be much better.

Anyone else having problems with the weapons? I can't switch weapons or reload manually. I can only use the last weapon I picked up. I tried changing the controls, with no success.
 
Hey Okidoki. Make sure you pick up the suit. It's to the right of the gun rack, lit by a green light. That should make things much better for you.
 
Hey thanks. I never would have figured it out (it looks like a dead soldier instead of a suit). But now I can't finish because it keeps freezing at the outdoor battle where you get the rpg. I've tried it a dozen times and even started over to get the suit, but it freezes at that part every time. I'll keep trying though...
 
Very fun map! You should definitely make more. I really like playing little maps/scenarios like these.

I was also getting the crashes too on the second half, but I did make it through.
