so i bought the orange box yesterday and none of it is working. the first game i tried was portal which works excellently until GLaDOS opens the first portal in the the tiny room like literally 20 seconds into the game, it crashes immediately after that and doesn't really say why it just says that hl2.exe had to quit unexpectedly so thats why portal closed and it prompts me to send an error report (which I've sent a million of). then i tried to play half life 2 which closed soon after trying to load the main menu and failing. it shows the valve logo loads for a bit then minimizes and shows an alert that says "Platform Error: module failed to initialize" then when i press ok i get another alert a few seconds later that says "hl2.exe - application error: the instruction at "0x241f94f7" referenced memory at "0x0e53f41c". the memory could not be 'read'. click ok to terminate the program" i found this interesting because sometime before i bought the orange box i had the demo for half life 2 which used to work fine when i first got it but about 3 weeks ago i noticed it was giving me the same error that the full version is. the only game that works from the orange box is that little puzzle game (peggle) episode one, two and tf2 don't work for the same reasons as portal. tf2 crashes when i pick or create a server and episode one and two just load infinitely until im forced to reset the computer manually.

im assuming that all of these problems have to do with half life 2's error message but im not sure. I've been wandering through a lot of forums and googling a lot of stuff also i checked steam's support page. from all of this i have basic idea of what isn't wrong (it a start ^^; ). I have everything up to date and functional. i don't have any fancy graphics cards just what the computer came with ( Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family ) which i know is fine for the games because i have other games from steam that are close to half life 2 in specs so yeah. i verified the game files, reinstalled the games and used the launch options "-dxlevel80", "dxlevel81" and "dxlevel70" and none of them worked and i restarted the computer after every attempt (its a gateway laptop btw). the computer is meeting all of the games required specs. and i made sure that none of the antivirus/spyware programs or any firewalls were interfering with steam or any of the games. also im using directx 9, i had to update it and the problem continued even after the update. i don't know how to fix this or what the problem is but i cant shake the feeling that directx might have something to do with it.

please help me out. thanks in advance.

update your graphics drivers.

also, Portal is a VERY demading game as when you look through a portal it is having to process two parts of the level at once.

the drivers are in their latest version, still nothing. and i see your point about portal.

do you think directx might have something to do with it?

you have tried running DX at several level to no avail, so i dont think so.

can you post your full system specs please? This might be a help.

(*if theres an important system spec that i left out let me know)

I'm starting to think that its not my computer though because I've been getting alot of promising help from this forum post http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=623213 they're experimenting with alot of different launch options alot of them actually work (i played portal for 20 minutes) but i get a blue screen with a whole bunch of code then the computer reboots itself (same for tf2). half life is still having the same problem though.
