Problems when flipping a model

Okay, I'm currently modelling a sword for Source. The first person animation is right handed, but I need to make it left handed.
Now, I used the Mirror Tool (I have 3ds Max 2009). This seems to be okay until I export it: generates lots of warnings, and when I import it again, all the bones are messed up.
I found out that by using the mirror modifier tool, I could get all the bones to their normal orientations again. I exported this, it seemed fine.
But when I imported it again, no changes had been made. The bones were still in the completely messed up positions.
Any ideas?
