I like (just to name a few) Dreamtheater, Liquid tension, symphony X, planet X, and more I can't think of at the moment.
edit:crimson and floyd definitly :)

I want some people to recommend some Prog. bands that I should check out.

I'm sure I listen to a ton that I can recommend, but I long ago gave up trying to figure out whats "progressive" but not "alternative," "indie," or normal rock.
I'm somewhat familiar with Dreamtheater though, and am just going to go out on a limb and beat you on the head if you haven't checked out Radiohead.

Premiata Forneria Marconi or also known as PFM

A great Progressive italian band, go get their album!! Great music!

And there are still all the classic bands, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Moody Blues etc.

These are must-have

Huge ProgHead :D

If you like Dream Theater, especially the more Progressive Metal Dream Theater, you will love Circus Maximus, Norweigan band, very talented have a very similar sound to Dream Theater (imo), but are more METAL driven, and their singer is better on CD then LaBrie (Who is absolutely AMAZING live).

try sonata arctica

Yeah dude. This stuff it great. I found some the emotional songs to be pretty gay :P but most of them made up for it with some tasty guitar solos

But the rest is just what I was looking for

no one's mentioned the pioneers of progressive rock? Genesis, YES, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Rush

Speaking of dream theater, anyone know where to get bootlegs of their shows? They played the wolverhampton civic hall last night and they covered a bit of stockholm syndrome, and being slightly too interested in muse I would love to hear petrucci doing the riff....woot!

Dream Theater often do alot of random covers, im sure their doing 2 gigs in London the first being thier music, the second being an iron maiden cover show

Would figure anyone the least bit familiar with prog rock would already be aware of 'em, but never hurts.

syd barret was ...kinda boring imho ..they didnt get really good till roger waters took over writing and Gilmour joined the group

well if it's any consolation I didnt discover floyd till the early 80's

.....I'm not helping myself am I?

Tony Levin Band is a must, but otherwise, King Crimson, Yes and Genesis.

Not really. You have to realize, most of us weren't even conceived at that point.

yes, so I'm constantly being reminded ;)

hey here's an interesting tid bit ..I was born before man landed on the moon :E

Pink Floyd would be the top name in "progressive" rock. They are definately my favorite band of all time. The Syd Barrett era, Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Jugband BLues on Saucerful of Secrets is absolute crap though. If you decide to listen to PF more though, just skip that album and that some.
