Project Origin Demo Walkthrough (First 17 mins of the game)

For a minute there I thought this was Project Offset. This is the new FEAR game that can't be called FEAR, right?

That looks sooo sweet. Searching now for clean drawers.

hmm i really enjoyed FEAR but this looks like more of the same in some mored detailed environments, alma isnt really scary anymore imo, she appears but she never does anything to you so its kinda like meh, the game still is pushing the formula of 'walk into a room littered with corpses and blood, have some ceiling panels fall, lights flash, hear screams, more bodies, bloody footprints catch a glimpse of a strange enemy, continue until you finally encounter it' :|

still no flashlight shadows

The scripted scenes are amazing.

One thing: I hope you don't stay in the hospital throughout the whole game.

They're ramping up the horror sequences with Alma, making it where you are no longer safe.

Sounds pretty damn good to me.

FEAR lost its horror feel imo. This doesnt even look remotely similar to the old fear, its a whole new game...

It just pains me to see the guy try to aim, shoot, realize his enemy has moved, and then repeat the process untill he just resorts to throwing a grenade. That's why FPS games suck on consoles. Other than that, looked a lot like the original FEAR. And I'm pretty sure they're still using the JupiterEx engine. I wonder if it'll come out for the PC.

I'm not going to watch this...

They want me to come playtest it and I want a fresh mind on it so I won't know anything... Though from your guys' reactions I'm probably gonna make an ass of myself and scream like a little girl :(

I liked FEAR, but I didn't like it because it was scary, because I didn't really find it scary at all. I liked it because the combat was juicy, the weapons were decent, and slow-mo melee attacks were supremely satisfying. The over-all creepyness of the game wasn't much more than window dressing to me, so as far as I'm concerned this seems to take the sweet, movie-like gunplay that was the basic core of the first title, and do it better. If this video is any indication the sequel appears to be no less scary than the first one while ramping the eye-candy/world detail even more, and I don't really feel it's a bad thing.

It seems like you may have liked FEAR for what it COULD have been (a really great horror game that happened to take place in first-person), instead of liking it for what it was (a really great action FPS, that happened to take place in a J-horror inpired universe).

Why is this game series so against having friendly NPCs.
I hated not having any friendlies during the combat sequences in the first game. :|

yes, I really wish there were friendly npc's. In fact, this game would so rock if it was team based, my god, it would really rock.

Erm, not really, considering what happened during the exp. pack of the first game. Douglas Shepard pretty much butchered every enemy in the construction area well before you arrived, and just sat there while you were running to catch up.

Sorry to say it, but there's not really anything particularly "scary" in that trailer, more like shock tactics at the very best. The F.E.A.R team really need to learn that darkness does not equal scariness, and that the player shouldn't be invulnerable every time a "horror" sequence comes up (after 1/3rd of the original game, realization that you were invulnerable during the horror scenes actually let you rest your trigger finger for a bit - totally contrary to what the developer wanted).

The FPS bit looks fairly good, though. Except for the Xbox360 turning and shooting, of course.

Looks exactly the same as FEAR. Can't they be more original with the locations?

Can someone willing to sit through this entire thing give me a summary of the atmosphere?

Is it more survival-horror oriented or more action shoot-em-up pace? The problem I had with the original FEAR is that it began like a survival-horror game oozing with atmosphere and originality with gorgeous shootouts and clever use of bullet-time, but gradually descended into the generic PC shooter #149848.

So, step in the right direction? Or another re-hash of the first installment?

no, i really did enjoy FEAR's combat, thats why i replayed it so much just for the visceral gunfights with good AI enemies. But i felt that scares got kinda lame at times, the story though was great.

Darkness really is important for horror games. It doesn't do it for all players, but for most, it gives the game a creepy feeling as you play it, making the shock effects more effective. I know Doom 3 was damn scary, and it relied very much on dark corridors, etc. The whole game doesn't need to be dark, it just needs a few levels to get you into the mindset, your own mind will do the rest from there, always anticipating something to jump at you and tear you to pieces.

Yes! Sure! Lets introduce team mates, why not!

"Don't forget to reload Dr. Freeman"

I frankly can't stand team based games. I want to do all the killing myself, and most of all i don't feel like getting a "game over" message just because my dumb ass team mates couldn't take cover...

The teamplay in R6V works well, but it is another kind of game entirely. It could be fun with some team-action in fear but only for part of the game.

is this really a NEW game? Looks exactly like FEAR. Let's hope they're putting some exterior areas in this, instead of using the same hallways again and again and again ...

Yeah it does look the same. They are probably using the same engine, with maybe a few tweaks here and there. However the first thing that I noticed in the video was the hood. It like covers half the screen WTF? I hope they scrap that shit on the PC version.
I like that they have increased interactivity with the environment a little. You can move stuff to a barricade for instance.

The HUD actually reminds me of the  fantastic  HUD in DX Invisible War

Because they use people who can't play in trailers? ;)

This looks just like the original to me.

lol its fear agian. The only difference is they placed the Npc's in different locations.

I just hated how everyone but me was an incompetant weakling who got torn to pieces before any combat really started. Any twists in the game involving backup teams getting liquidated really got stale by the 100th time.

I don't mean to make it Call of Duty, just some friendly NPC interaction would be nice.

I'm going just by FEAR, I don't know what the Xpack was like.

Loved F.E.A.R. for its ability to scare the **** outa me and me mates, so this doesnt look like it'll dissapoint! Rock On!

F.E.A.R. and the expansion pack still scare me, and I know exactly where Alma will be showing up at (now I just know when not to look). The action is very enjoyable, and the music really works in this game. The formula worked for me in the first games: more of the same in the expansion pack is fine with me.

I'll report back in 45-min when the download is done.

WHAT? :O:O:O:O:O

So I got freaked out for nothing????

And how did Alma keep killing me near the end, if you're right?

...some scenes, yes. Some others, I definitely died thinking that I was invulnerable during horror sequences.

Just viewed the preview and I like what I see. I'm intrigued by the fact that the protagonist finally just slapped around that critter before it was sucked into the maw of the poltergeist.

Replay the game again. There were only a few scenes where you were vulnerable to enemy attacks, in a game full of horror sequences:

  • The Paxton Fettel Scene (In the Core)
  • The "ghosts" flying at you bit near the end
  • The Alma scene (Right at the end)

In those three scenes you had a material enemy to shoot at (either ghosts or Alma). There was no vulnerable scripted bits during 90% of the game, i.e "monster leap at player and take health off while actually playing", most of them were "follow the creepy ghost" or "Alma jumps out/suddenly appears and stares at you".

  • End of level 3. Alma starts fire coming towards you & player jumps out window. NO DAMAGE.
  • Security Booth in Office Building. Press Red Button. Alma appears, says boo and disappears. NO DAMAGE.
  • In elevator. Alma appears, says boo, and disappears. NO DAMAGE
  • Lights flicker and die for 10 seconds, and blood appears on the wall. NO DAMAGE.
  • Windows Smashing with no present enemy. Ghost/Monster runs up air vent before player can engage. NO DAMAGE.
  • Ghost of Jancowski appears peeking around corners with no eyeballs. Creepy, but ... NO DAMAGE.
  • Alma jumps out in front of player in tunnel, says boo, and disappears. NO DAMAGE.

The horror bits in the final levels would have actually been excellent if placed throughout the game, not just having intermittent bits of J-Horror placed throughout the game. Felt like a haunted house with guns, really.

That said, after facing the intelligent AI of the clone army, facing ghosts who die in one shot and just float towards you was a bit of a letdown in the end. Like Far Cry's Trigen AI, to tell the truth.

Yeah I agree. However my favorite enemy out of the whole game has to be that invisible ninja type soldier. The fights with them were just awesome. too bad there weren't more of them.

Actually i got stuck at that part of the game for 30 mins.

Kept dying in the flames, and trying to jump over them, and shoot Alma and what have you.

Then i turned around, and saw the open window!!!!!!!:LOL::LOL:

Felt so stupid.
