prolly be a good game but valve is too greedy...

Man, what an idiot.... I'm sorry, I don't usually make these useless unconstructive posts, but, man.....

All this Bull is the reason games get pirated. It's just a game and they charge like it's some sort of cure to the plague. Talk about putting people on the moral fringe. Like it won't just be ripped like everything else.

pffft. Bargain bin for me.

lol, you're ridiculous, its the same price as the retail price. DEAR GOD, GREEDY VALVE!!!

It all seems so incredibly easy to understand(and I am sure many others do aswell)no one knows if Valve is greedy or not and anyone who says that they are,or are not is really not thinking things through. The truth of the matter(in my opinion)is that no one can possbily know the answer(we can only speculate) ACCEPT of course those who actually know the peolpe at Valve personally.

What I think you have to ask yourself is,do you have proof that Valve is greedy?or do you know anyone that has seen Valves greed first hand? ,if you dont have either of these things then how do you know? :hmph:

I think it all boils down to this, would you like to be found guilty if you were just suspected of doing something, even if there was no proof at all? I dont think so. :frown:

So does Valve deserve the benifit of the doubt?
Well,if you are a TRUE fan, then you allready know the answer. :E

Every time ANY commercial enterprise comes up with a new product that delivers more content more effeciently at less cost to produce it ALWAYS starts out by saying that the cost savbings will be passed onto the consumer.
It NEVER EVER is. It usually ends up costing us more. Any company will charge what they think people will pay, it's as simple as that
I am old enough to remember when audio cassettes replaced vinyl, and then when cd's replaced cassettes. Each time that happened we were promised savings and ended up paying more.
All companies exist to make as much money off us as they come.
It's called capitalism, and it doesn't work

Admin_Winnuting the recording of the G-man in your sig is awsome :)

Did you record that?

I mostly agree with you Sawyer,it is a rare case that the costomer benefits, and yes the company's always win, thats the way it is,and thats the way it always will be,but just to use valve as an example, and the way some people think they are greedy,I live in Australia and when half-life 2 comes out I am pretty sure it will be $89,95(aussie dollar of course)now theres no denying thats expensive and a lot of the money made(as everyone knows)will not only be going in valves pockets, but various retailers, distributers valves publisher and of course it will go into the develpment of Half-life 3.

The thing I ask myself is would Half-life 2 be as good as it is(if the reviews are anything to go by)if Half-life 1 had only been 15 or $20 and hence had only a fith of the profit to put forth into HL2 development,I dont know the answer to that question.

But if the hefty price tag will aid in a better produced game in the future, and left in the capable hands of Valve, the I will have considered it money well spent.Having said that though, who's to say that if Half-life had been much cheaper, more people would have bought it and even more resources would have been alocated to the HL2 project,I guess we will never know.

But the point is you will pay it.

Capitalism doesnt work? If capitalism didn't work no-one would buy anything. Companies want to make as much money as possible? Of course they do! So do you, which is why your complaining about paying out money. 2 sides of the same coin. If companies charge too much for things other companies come in and undercut them, and the price falls. You can argue that the market is rather oligopolistic, and companies, but the reason that companies dont want to cut game prices is that a fiver (GBP) off the price won't increase sales much. PC Games fall into Full price (30-40 GBP) and budget (10-20 GBP) and anything in between is usually rounded up.

Capitalism doesn't work because ultimately the value of what we all buy, is less than the cost that we pay for it. I suspect that this arguement though is for another place.

I am not knocking Valve for charging a reasonable price for what will undoubtedly be a superb game-of course they should be rewarded for the work that they have done. My point was that delivering the product to us through Steam is far, far cheaper to the developer and retailer than the total production and delivery costs of producing a "normal" game.
It is not to unreasonable for me as a consumer to expect that at least some of that saving is passed onto me, as I am not getting the benefits of a pretty box, manual and so on.
Amazon for example charges a lot leass for its' books and cd's (and computer games come to that!) than the High Street shops do because they simply do not have to pay the expensive High Street rates etc.I have the choice as a consumer to shop at either place, knowing that one is significantly cheaper than another.
Why is the product delivered online cheaper, because, I repeat, any company will charge as much as they can get for any product, even the cost of producing it continues to fall.
THAT'S why capitalism doesn't work!

Since when has it been fact that it has cost them 40 million to make HL2?...
Gabe made a comment long ago about puting another 40 million in if it needed it, but that dosn't mean that it cost that much in the first place...

I SERIOUSLY doubt it cost anything close to that.
How much do they pay their programmers then? +600,000 US a year? Did the havok engine cost them 10,000,000? I think not.
It's true, I've read it in an interview with Gabe in PC GamePlay. And if I analyze your words "about puting another 40 million in if it needed it" The word another means there is already 40 milion put in it. The Havok licence costs no more than a few hundred thousanths I think but having 30 people working on something for 6 years costs a lot. Most games only take 2 or three years too develop, except Duke Nukem Forever :p

I wanted too buy it over Steam too, just to give Valve more of my money. But I don't have a credit card. I heard Valve is looking for more paying options so if they include a paying option that I can use too I will cancel my retail pre-order and order it over Steam right away.

No..

Games get pirated becuase people who do so wouldnt buy the fecking game anyway.

I pirate lots of games, the good ones i buy.

So unless im some sort of super special one of a kind gamer then quite a lot of people do the same.

I laugh at the fact that you are going to cut your nose off to spite your face.

Unreal tournament 2004 has been out for almost a year and its still full price, Hl2 will be the single biggest game since Hl, it wont be lowered in price untill Hl3 is out.

besides the fact that Retail hl2 and steam Hl2 cost the same as any other game.

Too greedy? What kind of dumb crap is that? Warezers are greedy! They don't pay for crap and in not doing so it jacks the price of the game slightly for everyone else. When you create entertainment and art you can't survive off of fookin' charity. The time and money it takes to make 'THE GREATEST GAME EVER!!!" is ever growing. There are plenty of free games out there. Go play them and you'll realize that HL2 will have something they don't. That special thing being quality and purpose to evolve this medium.

Anyone ever been to EBX? www.ebgames.com is their website. Anyway they had a return policy for about 4 years where you could return a game for ANY reason within 10 days. Well guess what I bought, finished and returned dozens of games from there. Now their policy is that you can only exchange a game for the same price only once. The only reason EBX is still there is because the location is great, the local population can afford their products and they changed their policy. Why do so many people complain about the price of games? Get a job. I bust my ass and I have a cell phone for me and my sister. I pay for my tuition. I pay for my cable connection. I pay for my doggy's checkups. I pay for my food, gas and entertainment.

The only thing I get for free are haircuts and whatever I can take from work. Which by the way isn't a whole hell of a lot.

Why are we still feeding the trolls? KBharvestor is just here to get a reaction out of this community. Stop feeding him.
