nope. if the average person would be less (voluntarily) dumb he'd watch D9 instead of T2. the average person just wants to see shit being blown up and doesn't even realize his shallowness or give a shit about any kind of hidden meaning. basically nothing that challenges his brain.
even worse...being smart nowadays is not really cool and is even ridiculed.

that doesn't mean he's a less productive individual.

one thing is true that today school standards have fallen a bit. that's because once only a few selected persons could afford to be schooled. and those people were either "smarter" or richer. and being rich normally meant you were better educated in the first place.
being smart can also be learned to a degree...since higher brain activity normally stimulates synapses and other brain functions.

although i give you this right, that T2 was meant for a younger audience which normally would lower the "smartness" level.
 
So according to Jverne, if we don't watch just movies with "deep meanings", social commentary and moral lessons, we are labeled dumb asses... :dozey:

I for one did like D9 even dough I saw the crappy Internet version. However it's not one of those movies that I would like to watch over and over again, simply because the social commentary side of the film really didn't appeal to me. I found the setting disgusting, and I feel sorry for the people that really have to live there.

So the bottom line is, if D9 and T2 were on TV at the same time, I'd rather watch T2.

EDIT:

After reading more of the previous posts I realized he was actually referring to Transformers 2 and not Terminator 2 as I originally thought. So I take it back if D9 and T2 were on TV at the same time, I'd rather turn off the TV...

i watch stupid movies as well (well...not too often really), but what i meant was not realizing that they are stupid movies and you watch them as such.

i correct myself a bit...the average person is "voluntarily dumb". for instance most people who watch the movie Contact were like "what the **** is this movie all about" and stuff. people who are not lazy but don't like to use their brain. yeah we could say they are voluntarily dumb.

it's actually funny because nowhere in my posts i said i was superior to anyone else. actually i'm dumb i'm my kind of way. (yes you can joke about it). it's just that i realize it and do something about it.
some people find comfort in suppressing thought.
most persons out there have the capacity to think it's just that they don't like to.

that's why if the world was run by people who seriously enjoy T2 we'de have no good movies. D9 obviously debunked the myth that movies can be smart as well as fun.
instead by supporting good films as this we give millions of dollars to Michael Bay.

Because the "hidden meaning" in District 9 isn't caked on like a cheap whore's make-up? I haven't seen the movie but the trailer should be more than enough to see that it's not exactly subtle with social commentary.

Do something about it? Do what? this is not the fall of man or anything. Nothing need so be done. Bay won't enter any director hall of fame. People don't watch Bays movies for good acting or plot. It's a CGI explosion fest. And it looks cool. Same reason you'd go watch fireworks.
And D9 did well. I also enjoyed the hell out of D9, way more then T2 and hope they keep making movies like that.
Hopefully a sequal where CJ returns with a vengeance, Independence stile. Ka-bom.

well like...not giving money to Bay. even more it's obvious with games, people will buy a game despite being a turd. that send producers a message that they can keep churning out shitty games and still make profit.
boycott them and we might see some change. if you keep buying bland and unoriginal games that sell for 60$ you're just throwing fuel to the fire.

myth...well that's true, but you can't deny producers these days rarely put some real effort to make the movie stand out. *cough* terminator 4 *cough*

define smart...well you got me there, im not exactly sure how to define it. one way would be that you (at least) try to comprehend the world around you, see all the connections not just what's in front of you. but of course there are many definitions and probably neither is correct.
 
I still don't see what the big deal is. Good movies are still being made, so if people enjoy transformers, let them. I agree, Transformers 2 where pretty crap, I mean robo balls? Come on. But I still enjoyed it.
If anyone needs to be stoped from being any where near movies, it's George franchicide Lucas. Or anything media related at all.
