Right now, I can't be bothered to put down a long post with evidence etc to back up my position for I am lazy, but I thought it'd be nice to get the ball rolling.
Should prostitution be legal?
Personally I think it should be. It seems to me that it if it were monitored in some way, it could solve so many problems with diseases, and the drug-addictions and physical abuse and intimidations caused by pimps or random strangers who could be psychotic, rapists, murderers etc. It's legal in the Netherlands and Las Vegas, as far as I'm aware (plus one or two other US states?) - does anyone know if that's caused problems at all?

Yes, but if someone CHOSE to become a prostitute? Isn't that up to them?
I just think that it's necessary for the state to protect people and people who resort to prostitution are more often than not very vulnerable. Therefore, to stop their situation becoming any worse than it has to, safeguards couldn't hurt. It would also take them off the streets.

What's the difference between a pornstar and a prostitute?

(And I know that last bit sounds like the start of a joke, but it's not. Unless you can think of a punchline)

I don't think it matters whether or not it's legall, people will still get exploited. Making it legal might make forcefull prostitution less profitable. It's up to the individule if they want to sell there body, besides I'll support anything (within reason) that makes religeous groups angry.

that's their choice. With legalised prostitution you get rid of a lot of the problems that go hand in hand with prostitution. For example, in europe (cant remember specifically which country) special needs adults (mentally challenged) visit a legal brothel once a month; the incidents of rape from this specific population has dropped to almost 0 %

I can't believe how people think that because something goes on for centuries that it makes it somehow 'ok' and that because its legal in some countries it's ok too.

The Western world's in a downward spiral of corruption, and I wouldn't be suprised if prostitution and class A drug use was legal in 10 years time. The bad part is it would be so commonplace everybody would think it's OK.

By definition, selling sex is NOT OK. Neither is intoxication or abuse. Neither is gambling.

Am I the only person that thinks the western world has crossed the line, and not even realised?

Having been to Geneva, where there are legal brothels, and been in one.

I must say, they use agressive marketing techniques!

Anyway, the place seemed clean.. etc, I think it's a good idea, way better than the public toilets that are rumoured to function as Faversham's brothel..

Sure why not, it's the same thing as for marijuana, it will happen anyway, whether it's legal or not, but when illegal it will go underground with all its bad results (pimping, abuse etc)

And a lot of frustrated people may go to prostitutes in stead of raping someone.

And why shouldn't sex be sold like everything else? It's already being sold, even in the US, in the form of stripclubs and porn (hell, you've got the biggest porn industry in the world, talk about hypocrisy). If a woman voluntarily chooses for this profession, then fine, her choice.

But still... the whole trick of sex is trying to get it for free :naughty:

That doesn't make sense. That would also mean all girls in the porn industry do it against their will, after all, it's just paid sex, and it gets filmed, and by your reasoning no one would want that?
There's plenty of people who voluntarily do it, for various reasons.

who are you to judge what is an acceptable level of intelligence that determines whether you live or not? There is no standard for autism, you can be a "drooling vegetable" as you like to put it, or a functioning member of society or anywhere in between. Some people afflicted with downs syndrome can live very productive lives, hold jobs, live independently and contribute to society.
