Protest of Half-Life 2's requirement of an internet connection for SP / LAN

YOURE A LITTLE LATE GABE HAS ALREADY CONFIRMED THAT YOU WILL NOT NEED AN INTERNET CONNECTION FOR LAN OR SINGLE PLAYER, STEAM WILL ONLY NEED THE CONNECTION FOR LAN/SINGLEPLAYER FOR A FEW WEEKS AND THEN IT WILL BE CONNECTIONLESS.

Please xtasy, remain calm. This poor child is trying to do something right. You blew up in his face.

Sharp, the issue about having to be online to play LAN/SP is only temporary. It will be removed in the future. It will not be a permanent issue. You petition is therefore, sorry to say, useless. Sorry!

i was calm, unfortunately i happened to have my Caps Lock key depressed while i was typing.

and any petition at petitiononline is useless anyways, never gotten anything accomplished with that.

he's right though...even if it's temporary it's pretty dumb...does this mean that people who doesn't have an internet connection and buys HL2 in a retail store won't be able to play the first couple of weeks? that's pretty goddamn dumb if you ask me...

or people like me, who wanted to do a little HL2-LAN somewhere around October 3rd...

no, it means that if you have no connection you can play offline

if you have a connection your gonna have to Validate using steam, and lan (once you have activated steam, or want to play online) will be reliant on it to (initially, it wont always be) this is probably due to the fact that there were a lot of people who would play lan and only be using one version of HL, steam is anti-piracy.
basically its the same concept as WON, just with more features.
people generally have the wrong idea, they dont read press releases , they skim over them absorbing sporatic details, which leads to a lot of these silly anti -steam threads.

Why the **** is there a petition running then?

It's just the though. Steam version 1.0 is a ****ing bug version. Alot of people having countless problems in order to play a normal ****ing game like CS. Steam ihmo is just ripping the HL / HL2 (in the future)community apart. >> I hope also we don't need an i'net connection / steam in order to play a simple ass LAN or SP game.

I won't be able to play CS 1.5 anymore cayse WON is going down. CS 1.6 got ruined (The changed the weapon names, the numeric list of the weapons and added a stupid shield). STEAM crashed several times and it's very slow by alot of player... I just don't know why Valve likes steam that much ;(

who ****in writes these things?

They read like they were written by twelve year olds.
Hey I was pissed when I heard they were gonna require an internet connection too, but you'd be hard pressed to get my signature on something that stupid. Why cant these petition writters make a decent, engaging argument .

I think Steam should be required on a LAN, not for an internet connection...but for a piracy check. Steam should just run a check to see that each instant of HL on the LAN is unique and authentic and dissalow any instances that are dupes, or otherwise non-authentic.

As far as single player...it'll be fine, dont need steam functions anyway.

Also this...
By requiring an internet connection at all times, telephone connection users will have the unenviable choices of tying up their phone lines for hours, or not ever playing Half-Life 2 on-line (or update to the latest patches through Steam) until the single player experience is complete.
makes this the absolute dumbest petition ever. What ****ing broadband connection ties up your phone line?

First: I didn't make the petition

Maybe DSL goes thro your thelephone line!

And Gabe Newell said that STEAM and HL2 netcode was also designed for slow connection users. You don't need broadband in order to play the game HL2!

ISDN should get a good ping while playing HL2 (mods)

... 56k modem users...
but how does that arguement make sence?
if your playing online with a dial up connection aka 56k, it ties up your phone regardless...
steam is just a replacement for WON, with better features and a streamlined interface.

*sigh* realize, a lot of the people whining are warez users, and cheaters. thats why their arguements make no sence, they are grasping at straws, hoping others will be lost in their misguiding stupidity and vote on something that has no relevence to steam's actual function.

steam has bugs sure, no contesting that
but people dont even understand what steam is.
and instead of educating themselves they rather see fit to fill every forum they can access on their daddy's computer with utter useless irrevelent bullshit,

the worst part being when you EXPLAIN in DETAIL what they need to know / inform them on the reality of the situation, they completely ignore your post.
I could be a bitch and point it out right now, but its pointless.

very sad.

I was trying to clarify a point.

You have never used DSL have you? DSL uses your phone line, but you can still use your phone just fine, So what argument are you making?

Also, HL2 requires steam for internet play, and steam requires BROADBAND! HL2 netcode lies in steam...

I didn't made that petition at all. I just want to do a good thing: Trying that we don't need an i'net connection in order to play LAN or SP.

Now there are rumours that we do need an i'net connection. I don't know what I should trust. That is the same with the HL2 release date. We just don't know when Hl2 gonna be released. I know damn right what STEAM stands for. I just have lost my faith to steam. Even with version 1 (non-beta) there are countless problems with Steam and running games. The dev team of Steam should better work hard in order to fix these bugs/problems when HL2 is gonna be released.

Now I still read statements and rumours that we do need an i'net connection to play LAN games. Therefor I will leave my signature just that way till we are 100% sure about steam and lan/sp games!

well when it comes to things you dont know about, trust the maker

VALVE, most importantly trust what you hear from gabe.
dont trust people online.
GABE has stated it wont be needed, if your looking for the facts, there you have it.

In fact I have DSL. ADSL (what it's called here) runs thru telephone lines
The problem is: that I don't use always my DSL connection cause I go to college and alot of time I never at home for weeks
I know HL2 requires steam to play online over the i'net

Steam > recommands < broadband. That is different what you said: Steam requires broadband!

Mr. Redundant: Gabe Newell said in one of the emails that I send

He was explaining that STEAM was desinged also to works with slower connections and that HL2 will have a better netcode then HL1 cause of a new aproach they made!

so if he explained it to you what is your arguement?
your asking if you will need steam for SINGLE PLAYER
here IM going to CAPS this so it stands out, and reread it till you get it

****
HALF-LIFE 2 DOES NOT NEED STEAM OR AN INTERNET CONNECTION FOR SINGLE PLAYER
****
easy to understand I would think.
as for lan its a little more complex, Valve have stated that it will be INITIALLY needed (that means at first, for a set amount of time, not indefinite, not forever, temporary)
so theres no need to worry

it gets a little more complex that if you want to play online you have to activate steam, once you activate steam the INITIAL USE OF AN INTERNET CONNECTION, while playing single player is needed.

SOLUTION: if you are all up in arms about it.
DONT PLAY HL2 ONLINE UNTIL YOUR DONE WITH SINGLE PLAYER
easy
thank you for your time.
