I'm planning on getting one on the next gen handhelds, which one would you recommend. The PSP isn't out yet over here, is it worth waiting for it or should I get the DS? Which one does everyone think is better?

Buy the Sony PSP. You will not be dissapointed.

I've played and enjoyed both machines.

Much depends on what you want from them (will you be playing on the move? Will your friends have one? Is multiplayer a big deal to you? Do you want music and video playback? What kind of games do you like? Would you like something new, or tried and tested? etc etc)

I wasn't actually in the market for a handheld at all - but got a DS purely for the unique gaming experiences it offers. It'll also be the stronger console (imo) when it comes to multiplayer, which is a big deal to me, and offer first party Nintendo games (which is never a bad thing :))

Mario 64 DS is still as lovely as ever, Band Bros rocks (one of the most enjoyable multiplayer games of recent times) and Wario Ware is the ideal game for playing on the move.

Here are the unreleased games I must own for the DS:

New Seiken Densetsu (Mana) Series Game - Square Enix
New Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Game - Square Enix
FF6 remake - Square Enix
New 'Tales of ...' Game - Namco
Winning Eleven - Konami
New Goeman (Mystical Ninja) Game - Konami
Viewtiful Joe - Capcom
Sonic DS - Sega
Metroid Prime Hunters - Nintendo
Legend of Zelda 4 Swords - Nintendo
Advance Wars - Nintendo
Mario Kart DS - Nintendo
New Super Mario Brothers - Nintendo
Animal Crossing - Nintendo
Yoshi's Touch and Go - Nintendo
Kirby's Magic Paintbrush - Hal Laboratory

There's also plenty of other promising looking titles coming out (Vandal Hearts, Meteos, Microplanckton *add about another 20*) and plenty that haven't been announced. Lack of decent Software should not be a concern (although it might take a year before a good number of these come out)

(i'm especially excited about the multiplayer RPGs - namely 4 Swords, Secret of Mana, and FF: Crystal Chronicles. I adore co-op rpgs, and the DS looks to be the place to get them)

Lastly, there's the its future online. We'll have to wait and see how that pans out, but the notion of Animal Crossing online alone is pant wettingly good :)

The PSP is a very sweet machine - but at the moment doesn't have any games i'm excited about (this is bound to change though) or offer anything new. It is a small PS2 - which, if that's what you want, is all good :) (I also like Lumines very much - easily the strongest PSP release title. Shame about Metal Gear Acid :/)

Neither. It's like saying awesome, I'll buy a system with the same capabilities as another one that is over 10 years old, only I'll pay $250 for it.

Of course it isn't.

Except the DS is $100 cheaper and actually has features that no other major console has. :p

Thanks for your summary, its been very helpful in my decision. :)

No problem. It might be an idea to try out both machines as well - quite a few video games stores will let you have a go. I'm also a massive Nintendo fan, so try talking to someone who loves the PSP to get both views :)

Hope you enjoy your purchase (both machines kick ass)

I've also had an opportunity to play both. As of now I prefer the DS. It's different and a much better value as of right now.

Graphically, I think you'll see the PSP is superior, but it hasn't been netting them great reviews. Their games that have been reviewed are about equal to the reviews the DS games have been getting. So I guess it boils down to what floats your boat. If you have the opportunity to play both of them....do it.

The DS is profoundly different than the PSP. It costs $100 less. Simply put: I own a DS, but I plan on buying a PSP....just not for $250....so in other words....I won't be buying one any time soon.

In a nutshell, DS if you want affordability, classic games, and innovative features. PSP if you want sheer, raw, power! (and a nice big screen!) Personally, I'd go with the PSP, just because of its advanced graphical capabilities.

DS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nintendo has way better games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Super Mario!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Zelda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Kirby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you even seen Ridge Racer 4 Mobile gameplay? Its almost undiscernable from PS2-quality graphics.

The screen shot on the back of Ridge Racers box looked Unbelievable. Better than PS2?!!!!

but i haven't seen it go.....

Don't sleep on Namco - they own Pac Man and the whole sha-bang now, They can't die now. Expect Shit.

*In case you don't know... Pac-Man is legendary. The older generation thinks of an arcade. they think pac-man. It is the game that single handedly brought video games into something EVERYONE was talking about. Made video games popular.

More legendary than any game.

Just wait till Pac-Pix for the DS. You draw your own Pac-man and have to eat ghosts by drawing the map for him.

I very nearly ordered that today. My mates copy arrived and it sounds like good fun.

However, looking at the kirby vid again changed my mind :) (should be shipped on the 24th of this month \o/) Famitsu gave it 9/8/8/9 34/40 ....... not bad eh? :)

Edge gave Yoshi's Touch and Go 8/10 btw - which is also good news.

PSP and I did a LOT of research. I have the DS and it's nothing like the PSP.

I'm on the fence on this one.

I asked for and got a DS for Christmas, and I love it. However, the games so far arent that great. I know there are some good games coming soon, but most of them are very far away.

The PSP seems a lot better, and has a lot more games, which will probably be better than the DS games. Graphicswise, its better than the DS. The pricetag is too big, though, which is a big deterent for a cheapass such as myself.

I'm curious as to which PSP games ppl are looking forward to. The reason I don't own a PSP yet is because its future lineup isn't very impressive, where as the DS lineup looks very promising (have a look at the DS and PSP games release list thread)

Other than the new FF game, there seems very little originality or titles worthy of note (Viewtiful Joe should be super sweet though - and could single handedly sell me the machine :))

This isn't a dig at Sony - but I am a little concerned by the lack of 'good' looking games.
