Quake and HL2 - Akin?

Here is a direct quote from John Carmack's recently updated blog: "There are still bits of early Quake code in Half Life 2". I loved Half-Life 2, great game, but I found it interesting that there are still pieces of the ORIGINAL Quake in HL2. I wonder what technology in the engine he is referring to, and how he got this information since he doesn't work for Valve.

Nearly all of the gamelogic code in hl2 is based on the hl1 code, which was built on top of the half-finished q2 engine many years ago.

If it isn't broken......

Heck I've seen some people do amazing things with the Quake engine since it became open sourced (including making a lighting mod that rivals that of Doom3).
