QuakeCon 2010: no doom 4 new game announced is only rage on iphone

So you'd rather see the fifth game in a series, repeating what we've already seen with a different story, over innovations in other games?

I don't think your argument holds that well.

I expressed myself badly, I didn't mean that I wanted HL2Ep3 now rather than say Postal 2, all I meant was that Valve's strength IMO doesn't lie in their own originality, but rather in finding other independent devs who've made original stuff and picking them up, and then polishing the shit out of the games they make.

Also, once again, does anyone know if id Tech 5 supports fully dynamic soft-shadows?

Regardless of whether or not people wanted Doom 4, did anyone really expect them to announce it while they were still finishing up Rage? That's an ambitious project, and I was under the impression they were a pretty small team...

Haha, I'm sorry, are you the same guy who was ranting about gamers being whiny bitches when they don't get what they want? :p

There's like, one roomful of people working on the Doom team. And a handful more on MP.

Kap please tell me one thing. Can you actually see anything in the game this time?

But if you can see it's not scary! HERP DERP

But is that a problem? That's pretty original as it stands. I think it was an unprecedented move, doing something like that for such a big game. Perhaps it was done before, but this was certainly a landmark.

You can't get originality over and over again from one company. It stagnates. Hence we're disappointed now in companies which sold great games of the year once upon a time. Valve's constant fresh input works. I'm not kissing their arses and saying they're the best ever, but I do agree with the principles they've employed.

I didn't mean that it was a problem, let's just forget it!>_<

I'm a die-hard Doom fan. I would love to see a Doom 4. Doom 3 wasn't bad at all and I know they can do a lot more with the story line and gameplay.

All they have to do is take a look back and play the older Doom games. With Doom 3, they made the monsters look like space aliens - not demons. They made hell the classic fire and brimstone not the weird stuff they had in the original games - stretched out faces as walls, pools of blood, just really weird and twisted stuff.

I dunno, I'm not expecting a Doom 4 within the next 10 years, but it would be great to see it made some day.

Well, at least the release date for Rage has been revealed if nothing else. Exactly one year from now, September 13th of next year. Will the wait be worth it? Only time will tell.

nope, accept it. id is dead. beth only bough them to use their technology.

Well Rage does look interesting and I'll give it a try, especially since I'm a sucker for Post-Apocalyptic games (no thanks to Fallout 3). Besides, I enjoyed Doom 3 (though I do acknowledge that there were some flaws to it).

T-6000, can you clarify how the release date of September the 13th is exactly one year from now, August the 13th?

Oh crap, you're right. It's One year and one month. Sorry about that, for some odd reason i got August and September mixed up. I guess I'm just too eager for summer to be over.

Rage seems good, but in terms of graphics it looks like a polished up Doom 3.

Also, I just recently found out that id is pronounced like "id" as in "bid"..I always thought it was called the 2 letters "EYE-DEE"...id sounds so stupid imo.

Yes, and it was quite a change from Doom 3. At least what I played of Doom 3 before giving up.

Known about this official ship date for a while, and it was a little disappointing to hear (though the box art was a bigger eye-roll moment). There is solid reasoning for this date, but I can't say I totally agree with them.

You are retarded.

go, cry some more. id's days are over, the company you work for is shit. rage is going to be another mediocre, console shooter. you should have seen the poor marketing guy on the television, he was like "oh we gonna raise the bar with this game", what a joke. I almost felt sad for the guy.

I never really thought about it that way, those are some insightful points. Let's be friends. <3

I agree , looks extremely generic, I can't believe how hyped up they were getting during preview showings.

"Oh, we've made different enemies that use different attacks! it's revolutionary!"

Then the guy playing shoots an enemy and the previewers were like "WOOOAAAHH!!!111"

I think Rage looks fun, but hey, I happen to like shooters and don't judge games by things like their colour palette (brown, in a post-apoc world?!). I think some of you are misinterpreting the expression "raising the bar," marketing speak or not.

The problem I have with Rage so far, is all gameplay demos/footage are of the same few areas. This is supposed to be some monster of a game, why not show some off. There's got to be more finished than just what they've shown, I hope.

I'm thinking it's because they're being careful as to not show too much of the game just yet, since the game still has over a year before release. They'll probably show more later this year or next year. But it would be nice if they told us more about the RPG aspects of the game, as they haven't been too clear on this just yet.

They have been very clear about the game having hardly any rpg aspects as far as I can remember.

Can't wait to see the livefeed of Brink, too tired to watch shaky handcam footage.

ID Software explained why they didn't show Doom 4 at this year's Quakecon, they want to wait until they have something "really impressive" to show for Doom 4.

Also, according to Tim Willits, looks like they are planning on doing some DLC, though they aren't sure exactly what kind of DLC it'll be.

http://www.vg247.com/2010/08/16/id-confirms-dlc-for-rage-at-quakecon/

I'm hoping that the DLC (at least some of it) will be single player DLC. Most DLC released for games is mostly Multiplayer DLC (Usually a few maps for $10), with few DLC being solely for single player. The only Single Player DLC I have downloaded was F.E.A.R. 2 Reborn.

This. Nobody gives a **** about Multiplayer. It was just a fad.

Rage is supposedly more focused on Single Player, so it would make sense to make the DLC more focused on Single Player.

The engine is pretty appealing to devs, except for this little detail:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/08/12/id-not-licensing-id-tech-5/#more-35845

Before they were bought out by Zenimax ID Software was debating whether to license out ID Tech 5 or not, but now that hey have been bought out by Zenimax they only plan on licensing out the engine only to other developers under Zenimax's wing.

T-6000, so theoretically, Bethesda might actually adopt the ID Tech in the future?

Please God let it be so.

Technically yes, if Bethesda wants to use the engine. Some people are hoping that Bethesda's future titles will incorporate ID Tech engine 5, maybe even a future Elder Scrolls title or Fallout title that uses ID tech Engine 5. That'd be pretty awesome, if they made good use of the engine.
