Ok, I am not certain if this is the right place for this post but here it goes…First off, I guess I should point out that I am not a very good player nor do I have an aspiration to become the greatest Death Match player of all time, but there is a certain recurring occurrence that has been exasperating me for the week that I have been playing the game.

This happens to me 9 times out of 10 and I don’t know why. The usual sequence of events is as follows: I find an enemy. I fire 6 or so shells from my shotgun on his/her face from point blank range. He/she shoots me twice with his/her PDW. Instant demise on my behalf.

So my question(s) are: Should I not be aiming for the head? Is the PDW in fact somehow more powerful a weapon than the shotgun? Is someone cheating? Or am I just a really really bad player?

And please forgive me my bad English. I’m Estonian.

In HL2DM, don't aim for the head, just spray at the body mass. Keep moving.

Crouching will NOT make you more accurate.

Jump around a lot.

Mhh, aim for the head... Triple damage... But keep moving; jumping all the time helps, but then again, there are some players who hate jumpers :D

I bit hard to believe...but nonetheless just stay moving. The worst thing to do in this game is to slow down or stop completely. Also remember that explosives are your best friend. Dont just wait for a bunch of enemies to use your SMG nade(secondary fire), its ok to use it on one person! Or if you have the overwatch rifle, vaporize someone with the orb, just one person. Instant death is all you want in this game, remember that.

Alright, perhaps I exaggerated a bit...:D

But thank y'all for your advice, though, I'll try to keep all that in mind...

I disagree with jumping, experienced players avoid it. You will do much better if you reserve your aux power for one on one moments, and sprint/strafe around your opponent.

Aim for the upper body, that way you are more likely to score a hit, with a good chance of a headshot. And the shotgun at close range is incredibly effective, you should need no more than 3 blasts to get the kill

Um, with jumping you have full aux all the time, which is why experienced players do it...

Jumping makes you an easier target because your movement on the X and Y axis is more predictable. It is easy to predict where you will land, making a XBox or Magnum shot all the easier. You may be right about the aux power, but I find myself to be mor effective on the ground :)

Lag might be a factor. I often have really bad choke and that kind of thing can happen. It looks like you are hitting your opponent, but due to lag, you're not. Another possibility is that your opponent has a lot of armor on. Normally, you can have up to 100 armor, but some maps have super-chargers that give you up to 200. Armor aborbs more damage than Health does, so it takes a lot to kill someone with a lot of armor.

Still that does not explain how they can kill me with just a couple of rounds from their rifle, which is actually what I would like to "learn" how to do.

In addition, people have often spawned in front of me and killed me in a similar fashion, so at least in those cases armour is not a factor, or am I wrong?

Check your ping when you're playing cuz a laggy player is a dead player. As said before, always be moving to make it harder to be hit by the rifle. Don't lead with the rifle as the shots are probably instant and latency screws everything up. Try to find a useful dedicated button to bind to gravity gun, etc (rather than scroll to select) as being quick on the draw with it can save your ass from grenades, file cabinets.

Then, play hours and hours and hours until you get good at the game ;)

Everyone else feel free to discredit anything I just said.

Ping generally refers to the time it takes, in hundredths of a second, for a packet to go from your computer to the server and back.

eg, a ping of 300 would mean it takes 300 milliseconds for a response from the server to reach you.

The lower the better.

Enable a ping readout with the console command "net_graph 2"
It will also display "loss" (the number of packets that failed to make it and need to be re sent) and "choke" (the number of packets waiting to get in but that can't yet be accepted because your computer is busy)

Weird. I can play ok at 100ms. But above 120ms or so is getting bad.

I sometimes get a ping as low as <10, but it is choke that kills me. The game is basically unplayable for me on almost every server. Every once in a while I will find a server that runs well, but then the next day it won't. I have a fast computer and a fast connection (15Mbs/2Mbs). I have tried everything: drivers, virus/malware search, defrag, clean boot, no other programs running, every setting on low, cvar settings, rate/cl_updaterate, etc, heapsize, dxlevel, Steam to low priority, etc, etc, etc.

My latest problem is that my mouse stops working mid game. Maybe an IRQ conflict, but this is odd, because the only thing I do on this particular computer is play HL2 and I have not installed any new hardware/software in a long time.

If you just want to see ping real quick, just bring up the scoreboard with tab.

What is choke by the way?

And ether, no matter how well you maintain a windows machine, it still goes bad due to factors I cannot explain. Maybe it's the system updates, maybe it's the registry being unclean and accumulating junk, but you're never safe. The only cure is a fresh install. And maybe your mouse is just bad, but try reinstalling the drivers anyway.

Use net_graph to see ping all the time. It shows FPS and choke also.

Code:
net_graph "3" // Shows the net_graph (ping, FPS, choke, loss, in- and out-speed.
net_graphheight "980" // puts it on top of the screen for 1280x1024, adjust for your res.
net_graphpos "3" // puts it in the middle of the screen

To learn about what the different net settings doesn and how to try to avoid choke, read this:

Just been on for a short while, man it sucks you hardly move before some uber l337 piles a few more hundred million bullets in various critical parts of your body.

Lol if I had a server I might show you some tricks :D

Although if you want to own everyone everywhere at the same time instantaenously five times after each other before they even get the chance to spawn, netrex is the member you should seek.

Well so you can be that 1337 moving guy that's always hopping around the map, here's my tutorial to jumping! :D

1.) Hold sprint
2.) Do a W + A or W + D movement, which is forward and a strafe key
(left or right)
3.) Jump, and arc your mouse INTO the jump, so it's kinda like this,
( (only about 10 degrees or so btw. the arcing of your
mouse.)
4.) You should be mid-air right about now, let go of W and let go of
sprint, too.
5.) Hold crouch.
6.) Hold A or D (whichever strafe key you started with)
6.) Everytime you hit the ground, jump again, timing is extremely
important on the first "bounce" as you hit the ground mainly because of
the fact that it's what all bounces afterwards are based on. You can't
gain speed by overbouncing, you can only maintain it or lower it.
7.) OPTIONAL STEP: This doesn't do anything really, but each time as I
hit the ground I use a different strafe key. So, I do a left strafe
jump, and I start overbouncing along the ground - I'll hit A for the
first jump, then D for the 2nd one, then A and then D again. I do this
because if I come up on a corner or something, I can turn the corner
without wasting my sprint for another strafe jump. You can still do
this
just holding ONE strafe key, A or D, but you have to let go of A or D
then hold the direction you want to go, as in if you're turning right
you hold D, turning left you hold A, etc. With the optional step you
can
sometimes get it so that you don't' even have to let go of anything, as
you were holding D as you ever coming up to the corner!

Sorry if it has weird spacing in some places, I copied it from one of my emails I sent out to a friend.

Oh, and Polar_bear. If you can beat them both, you're probably some kind of god and don't need to read this because you already know what this reply contains.

Hey my HL2DM won't work for some reason it will load and everything but when I try to start it my screen will flash and then nothing will happen. My HL2 works fine so I don't know what the prob is. HELP!?!?!?!?!?!

but if it was a prob with my drivers wouldn't it effect HL2 too instead of just hl2dm?

The best bunny hopping crowssbow shooting bastard wins! Also, explosives dominate HL2 Deathmatch, don't even use a gun :p . When in doubt, drop a grenade at your feet, pick it up and rush somebody. Thats all the advice I can give
