Im thinking about playing the original first before hl2 but-

1. Is HL:goty compatible with windows XP?
2. Would I be able to add/download the high definition pack to it without having Blue Shift?

I own GOTY myself..
1.) Yes its compatiable
2.) You can also just get Steam and register the CDKey that you get wit hthe game (you then don't need to install it.. adn then convert it, yada yada yada) and you get everything besides CSS, DODS, HLS, HL2,CSCZ,CSDS, and Blue Shift (its not even availabe on Steam in the first pace)

Hope that answers your question!

2) I think the high def pack is only available through blue shift. (Although it's probably included in HL:S.)

Yeah thats what I was thinking BUT the pics on the box of HLgoty shows that the models have shadows. The screenshots ive seen of the original hl dont have shadoes so isnt shadows a product of the hd pack?

No the hd pack is just high-poly models. Half-Life has shadows actually but they didn't have time to implement them correctly so they turned out kinda borked and they are turned off by default. There is a console command to turn them on but I'm afraid I don't know it.

r_shadows 1

They are commented out, but with a little hack, you can get it back on.

I own HL:GOTY editon. It says it won over 40 goty awards. :D

So how can I permenantly have shadows enabled without have to set it up everytime I play?

the shadows in hl 1 sucks, your better of without em :naughty:

never knew about this shadows thing, interested in seeing a follow-up on it pls, incase my googling fails, ^_^

kiwii, that avatar just isn't right, lol, no way. i knew someone would do something like that one day, lol, didn't expect it to be this one.

I was wondering, why do they outside box and some screenshots i see of HL:goty have these very nice HL2 quality shadows on the models? Just some kind of false marketing or can it really look like that in game?

You just have to use an older version of HL to be able to enable the shadows. Put it in the console and it should save it to your config file automatically.
