I was watching an entertaining movie on USA titled. Thought Crimes which stars Navi Rawat the beautiful and captivating actress that is also on The OC. Anyway.. the movie is about a girl with new found telepathic abilities blah blah blah.. dont wanna ruin it for anyone but during the movie I started thinking...

During the movie several non english speaking people were in the scenes and there thoughts were being heard in their native language. Wouldn't it be "raw data" so to speak as the language is merely the persons interpretation? I would think that thoughts are not language specific.

What are your thoughts?

Well, it's interesting, as I think in English. Multilingual friends confess to thinking in their primary tongue.

In the sci-fi shorts I've written (yeah, you just knew I was going to bring them up again) telepathy is an inaccurate science and only the most advanced people can penetrate the depths of the human mind to read the "raw data" as you put it (I kinda like that term actually. Time to rip it off).

Even though I believe there to be no telepaths in modern society, I maintain that the principles are sound (the brain is little more than a series of complex electrical pulses. Learn to read and manipulate those pulses, and that constitutes as telepathy).

We won't undergo physical evolution since our technology robs us of the need, but it's quite possible we will gradually push our minds to higher limits.

people tend to think in a jumble of words and associations. when i say water, your mind probalby conjurs up images of rain or a glass of water, or a lake or something, maybe you think of concepts like fluidity and wetness. but you also think of the literal word itself "water", the sound of saying it wah-tur and the sequence of letters w a t e r. if you were french, you'd think many of the same associations mentioned above, but you wouldn't think wah-tur and w a t e r you'd think oh and e a u.

while i was typing all of the above i was thinking the words to myself. now if someone who didn't understand english had been reading my mind, maybe they'd have gotten the gist of what i was doing (typing, thinking about water, etc.), but they probably wouldn't be able to recite (transliterally) what i have just typed.

just my take, i mean, who knows right? unless.. you're reading my mind!

I talk to myself in my head sometimes, other times I'll picture things or random words will just drift through my thoughts.

It's weird, but I just noticed today that when I'm talking to myself in my head, I'll refer to myself as 'you', as if the voice were another entity speaking to me...

I always wondered if it was similar to hypnosis and the "power of suggestion". It all depends on whether or not you try to resist...

Sometimes I genuinely believe that I have a split-personality in the making- I do sometimes refer to myself as "you" mentally, but also "I" and "him". It's almost as if my brain is in conflict, a huge, pointless uncivil Cold War where they refuse to refer to me directly :(

Where's that therapy hotline...

Yeah I do the talking to myself thing too.. but outloud not just in my head. I often debate decisions with myself or offer encouragement/discouragement as needed. I am sure it is not healthy but I have chosen to take on a life of solitude and this is the result :x

I plan to seek out some advice from a therapist in the near future as it is getting harder to deal with the older I get.... but anyway..

On the topic of Telepathy. I often look at people and supress certain thoughts thinking.. what if they can read minds?

Edcrab, seems like the way my brain works. Only I know I have problems :)

Edit - Edge, me too about that encouragement/discouragement thing. I've been giving myself more encouragement than usual lately...

Haha, I do that too.

I remember when I was younger and thinking naughty thoughts, I'd try to supress them when I was around my parents :E

If I'm wandering about by myself and a particularly witty reflection comes to me, I have a habit of posing it in an imaginary conversation in my head. I need some minions or something. I remember hearing somewhere that verbalizing your thoughts is a sign of madness.

About telepathy, I never thought of it as hearing actual dialogue in a person's mind. Something more physical, like reading emotions and intentions, that sort of thing.

Yeah. I'd imagine it as something a bit more intimate really, viewing a swirling vortex of thought and emotions that are complete gibberish but recognisable to someone who actually thought long and hard about... well, thinking.

As for talking to yourself being the first sign of madness, it depends who you ask- those that talk to themselves are undoubtedly the scientific/psychological types that say that people who talk to themselves are actually great organisers and planners

Trust me, they cant.

Why do people still believe this crap? telepathy, psychics, magic... its all bs. If it wasnt it would have been proven by now considering the amoun t of con artists who claim to be able to do it.

Telepathy and magic are not even the same topic. Humans use roughly 10% of their brains. Is it crazy to believe if someone were to somehow unlock any portion of that unused 90% they would have special abilities not found in common people.

And the topic WASN'T IS TELEPATHY REAL. Thanks for the reply with no substance.

I know it wasnt originally.

Whether I believe it or not are irrelevant to this topic. I personally don't have enough knowledge on the topic to decide whether I believe or not and I am not concerned with exploring that topic. Just curious as to how people think the brain processes thoughts. Telepathy was merely an example.

You are adding nothing find another thread to troll in.. there are plenty.

Well i added something that you quite clearly didnt know. And you were the one who said the principles of telepathy are sound, despite later admitting you didnt know enough about the subject to form an opinion.

Im not trolling.

That did not teach anyone anything except you are trolling for an arguement.

I tihnk if we did have telepathy, we wouldn't really be able to "read someones thoughts". It would more be a case of percieving their emotions or perhaps having an understanding of their intentions. Or as Terry Pratchett puts it "Seeing the shape of the mind"

Oh shit, thoughtcrimes!!!

If there is hope, it lies in the Proles.

Oh, ok. "humans use roughly 10% of their brains" must mean "people use their entire brain" then. Sorry for my misunderstanding.
