OK OK, normaly I would know this type of thing, but I just got back from 4 months in Amsterdam and I had no consistant connection to the internet. Things change rather quickly as you know. What I need to know is what, if any socket 754 chipsets other than the K8T800 PRO support dual channel ddr? I rule out the K8T800 Pro simply because only ABIT makes a board based on that chipset for the 754 platform. I ask this because I want to build a new desktop (if I ever sell my laptop) and will be on limited budget and will be going with a 754 Athlon 64 3000+

Socket 754 models are very quick. They are all single channel but they don't need it.
The memory controller is on the CPU so the socket determines if it is dual channel or not.

I'd recommend the MSI K8N Neo nForce3 250 board though. It works well. ;)

imo you should wait for lower end socket 939 CPU's as AMD wont make socket 754 CPU's over 3200+ in speed and both platforms use different memory. This means in 18 months time if you want a CPU upgrade it means you will have to upgrade your motherboard AND memory aswell...

I agree with matt... go for low end socket 939's for upgrade purposes and that it supports dual channel ram... added bonus (also its just slightly quicker than 754)

Both sockets use the same memory and 3700+ is the highest CPU on Socket right now.
Granted Socket 939 uses dual channel memory but they are also more expensive.
They have worked the performance difference into the model number too.
A 3500+ performs slightly better than a 3400+ enough to earn it a 100+ rating over the 3400+ yet they run at the same speeds and the 3500+ cost 100$ more. The boards are not available for under 100$ either.

Compare socket performance

Though, either will be great. It's just if cost becomes an issue don't consider Socket 754 as not an option.

Thanks everyone! ASUS you kick ass man!
Heres what Im goin with for my new esystem and keep mind, Im on a budget of $1250!!!

MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Athlon 64 3000+
1 gig pc3200 (kingston)
80 gig SATA
8x DVD +/- RW
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
Aspire X-Dreamer case
Aspire 520 watt Black alluminum PSU

$1224.99 With 2 day shipping! ! ! finnaly I sold my laptop to be able to do this. . .

considering the socket 939 is hugely expensive, I think i'll probably go with socket 754 myself.. However if the socket 939 comes down in price, I might just invest in it
