Before you're able to walk around the train cart, some guy who looks like Governor Tarkin from StarWars is talking to you. He also talks at the end of the game. I haven't played the first game because I'm using the 360. So, who is this guy and where does he fit into the story?

Are...are you talking about Dr. Breen? As in, the consul of Earth? The figurehead leader the Combine instated to govern over Earth in their stead while the human-synth conversion process was underway? Perhaps the most important character in the game?

Friend, you need to pay more attention.

lol...he is clearly talking about the G-Man.

Haven't played the first game and he's isn't mentioned too much in the second one or in any of it's episodes. Unless I'm really not paying attention and I thought I have been. :l
...

The G-Man - I would tell you who he is & everything, but I don't know, in fact No One knows, except for VALVe.

People have theories about who he is, Youtube G-Man.

lol...he is clearly talking about the G-Man.
Ah. I kept trying to think, "Who's he talking about that talks at the beginning, and then at the end?"

Man, I think I've heard the word "G-Man" so much in the past few weeks I completely blocked him out as a possibility.

Disregard what I said then. That's the G-man, your employer. Handler. Captor. Basically he owns you.

You dun know Gman? Pay more attention, he is one of the greatest characters in HL2.

Yup, it's definatly the Gman -

"GMan", a very mysterious figure at Black Mesa, whose motives seem to be independent of both humankind and of the Combine
and
The Human Rebellion is Gordon's first official assignment after Black Mesa, and his second assignment under the supervision of G-Man. G-Man pulls Gordon out of the slow-time warp for his assignment.

The bit at the beginning of HL2 is Gman pulling you out of the time warp

Darkside - think man!

Gman is basically the guy who wanted the Resonance Cascade (Which is what happened in HL1, where Black Mesa was researching the alien planet Xen and they attempted to create a portal between both worlds but failed and caused portals all over the facility, eventually taking over the Earth. The Combine, a notorious race known for demolishing worlds noticices Earth is vulnerable and takes over). The whole thing is basically Gman's little sick game which will obviously eventually fix everything back up again. He's an entity and transfers Gordon between his realm and Earth when he is needed.

This is why I disliked valve's decision to give consoles The orange box. Damn console-fags. /Me shakes fist at sky.

Edit : I was not trying to be nasty to the guy who asked the question , its just that all the people who played it on consoles don't have a clue about whats going on in game.

this is the only post you have to read Hokey: That man your talking about is who we call the G-man, but he technically has no name or identity, that name was made by the fans after hl1. He's extremely unknown, we only know that he 'hired' you and is using you to do things for him. He is most likely not human, and may be good or may be evil, but we don't know.

Yeah, listen to fiberawptic. He is better than the rest of us by X divided by zero.

If you haven't played the first one I recommend getting it. The system requirements aren't what you'd call high, so you would more than likely be able to play it. You'll enjoy every second.

Thanks for the info. Wish I had the first game. :(

Are they discs or just a download?

It actually comes in the form of a cassette, oddly enough.

*high fives friend in room* Never mind the question above.

Oh hey guys, can I join in into the "let's be an asshole to a new member with legitimate questions in order to make ourselves feel more important using the anonymity of the internet" game?

G-Man: the one guy all the old members hate, and all the new members love to introduce themselve's with while thinking their ideas are somehow new.

Oddly, you're a strange exception hokey pokey, considering you actually came out and asked who the **** he is.

Therefore, I for one, welcome this new member in the annals of hl2.net

They just wanted to make more money.

the bold is wrong, his name simply came from his model name in HL1, which was npc_gman, and VALVe used it forevermore.

That is the story.

I played it on the 360, and I understand it. Though, I feel like the only one who does on the console.

No, man. No. I'm tired of thinking of the G-man. It's really a sign of how much I just want to dull that name out of my head that I completely, 100% forgot about him when I was reading OP's post.

I'm so tired about hearing about the G-man and reading G-man threads that I honestly blocked him out.

The G-man no longer exists to me. I no longer know who you people are talking about.

That's good, it means you're in for a shock when Episode Three finally rolls around.

It's a shame for anyone who hasn't played HL but has played HL2 to begin playing HL now.

Anyone who begins playing it now would consider the game "boring". There is a lot of puzzles involved, but the gameplay itself is no better than the modern games you'll see these days.

It's a shame how the current number of people who had first hand experience with one of the greatest FPS ever will never increase but only decrease. All FPS games released after HL are revamped and improved versions of it.

That being said, I encourage the OP to play HL. You would definitely find it boring, but I like to call HL to those haven't played it yet a good "historical lesson" on FPS.

Find it boring? FIND IT BORING?

Well, maybe.

Or you could do what I hear a whole lot of non-playing HL original players are doing and hold out for Black Mesa Source.

I don't think you'd find it boring, quite the contrary. One of my friends who is into scary games, like condemned, FEAR, and Dead Space thought it was actually scary... Then again, he thinks that The Flood in Halo are scary, but he has never played half-life, and loves it.

You go ahead and tell me it's boring when you have a 5 ton, 13ft. tall armored pillbug with flamethrowers for hands and a seismic stomp that can liquify a man chasing you through an underground railway hub.

condemned, FEAR, and Dead Space

Great list of games, I loved all of them. I can't wait for FEAR 2.

I always thought of HL2 as being more intense than scary, except during my first playthrough at ravenholm, when all of the slow zombies are coming at you. But now that I've played l4d, I realize how easy it is to run circles around them.

Commenting on the sig ^. I'm a console gamer so I really had no idea. When I look at that post now, along with one right after, I get a chuckle.
