quick question

i got the blueprints of a tank i want to make but the back ground colour of the pics. so when i select what im trying to make around the pic all the edges go white as well... so i was wondering if there is any way of making the selected polygons a different colour

You can, but it's not a good idea. It's better just to darken the pictures you put in the background instead.
