TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 10 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

not surprised it was a heart attack

Damn. I thought for sure the [Ultimate] Warrior would've gone before he did.

Dayum. Sad news, I remember Randy Savage in the WWF from when I was younger. No prizes for guessing what'll be on the next WWE broadcast, then! Tributes abound, R.I.P Randy.

He was before my time of interest in WWF. But he was talked about. RIP.

Luckily veering across traffic like that he didn't take anybody else out with him.

gunna miss him. this is almost as bad as if Mr T died.....even though he didn't

R.I.P.

I loved the shit out of him and wrestling when I was a kid.

Absolute legend from my childhood. Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man Randy Savage, Tatanka and Bret Hart.

Wrestling now is beyond shit. I didn't think they could sink more generic and dull than John Cena, but now The Miz is the main man over there. It's pretty much sucked since after the time The Rock and Steve Austin were champs.

Ooooh Yeahhh.

What a damned shame. That said, I didn't really know who he was, since I was actually a WCW fan (the shame).

He better get into the Hall of Fame now. RIP Macho Man; like Stardog said, a childhood legend.

Fantastic stage personality, haven't heard his name in years - damn.

Legendary. It's guys like him who put the company on the map.
