store :)

there is speculation that it might be available on Steam earlier than in stores.. so eh.. i might pay one month's subscription fee just to get it as soon as possible and then get the Collectors Edition when its made available :)
x2
+1 extra copy (3 comps)

preordered from ebgames, when it arrives I will open it, take out the manual, boot up my pc, then take the manual into the bathroom and take a dump and read thru it. Depending on how anxious I get about playing it, I may have to pinch off the loaf a bit early o_O Seriously...

like i wont be playing it from 12 midnight on the day of it's release all the way till mornin.

If they wanted to track usage patterns with WON they could.

You have a unique ID, you log onto a central server to authenticate, etc. Any game with a unique ID system that allows for global banning can easily do the same thing.

And being paranoid about a piece of software that *conspicuously* phones home about things is pretty illogical. Pretty much any software running on your PC could phone home and tell its makers anything. Heck, you'd install a Mod for a game without a second thought, but that's executable code that is running inside the hl.exe process, meaning that it can make any kind of outgoing communications that wouldn't even register on a firewall because hl.exe obviously needs outgoing comms to work online.

And about not wanting to have to install Steam to play singleplayer. Ok, imagine they re-named Steam to Half-Life 2. Would you then complain about having to install Half-Life 2 to play single-player? I know this may seem like a stupid argument, but it's just a piece of software you install to play the game. Every other game requires you to install software, oddly enough, even if it's just the game itself. What next, complaining you actually have to install the game at all to play?

When you have an X800...all your money went to that.....but I also got HL2 on a coupon and I think I'll have plenty of time to pre-load.

Give me two good reasons why a person playing SP and SP only needs Steam. Because Valve says so isn't a valid reason. This is the first SP game I can think of that requires such nonsense. Why does it require it? Valve obviously has it's motives. I'm not trying to preach some vast conspiracy theory either. I think it's a bad direction to go for SP gaming though.

As far as your inaccurate statements about software I don't know where to start. MS Word, FarCry SP and every other peice of software I own does not require online content management software. They don't send data to Microsoft of Ubisoft servers. If I unplug the internet those programs still work. I don't need to log into anyone else's system to use it. Word doesn't tell a Microsoft server to push a new program onto my computer.

Most if not all the EA games will install their patching client, especially the racing games. Basically, in your case Steam would be stripped down to a launcher, nothing more (said launcher would be used for future Valve releases as well). Not trying to argue, just bring out a thought :)

Store. Downloading it will take to long at ~100Kbit/s. Also, I like the traditional feel of going into town, buying the game, trying to attract as little attention to me as possible so that i don't get robbed of the game...

and ofcourse the relief when i get home to play it.
and ofcourse the utter ecstasy when i play it!

roll on HL2.

It will depend on the extras in the physical CE HL2. If there are some cool goodies that you wouldn't get through download then buy.
Also it will depend on the exchange rate at the time of purchase.
If I will save more than $20-30 with the Steam purchase (and there is nothing I particularly want in the CE pack that I won't get from steam) then I will buy over Steam.
Else store purchase.

There still hasn't been any word on the contents of the various editions has there?

No latest info from Valve is that they STILL haven't decided on what they actually want to ship in those boxes... Valve stop drinking your coffee & get to work damnit :E

You know, I'm not entirely sure what Steam is, although I have some idea-- and that is enough.

Store.

Store to get Collectors edition. as long as it's under $100. Otherwise standard version.
Preloading it with steam of course, CD's are best kept as a backup anyway.

Steam is amazing. :)
Anybody who says otherwise is just scared of change.
It's just as secure as anything else you do on the internet, prabably more so.

the store because I want the BOX not some electronic bits. And I am Definately buying collectors edition but, GEEZ, someone above said only if it was less than $100??? OMG!! IF it's like, 80 bucks I'll flip. $49.95 for the REGULAR VERSION I would hope and like, $59-69 for the collector's edition. What are they putting in it? A solic gold plated disc? Complete with Gordan Freeman HL2 logo'd dildo? WTF! Although from what I gather, Valve is doing some weird pricing and packaging for HL2.... SO who knows. They should just charge a penny each time you load the .exe file :)

Delivery seems out of the question, and the product will be quite popular once it reaches here. I'll probably download it from Steam.

Somebody? Hey i'm right here.
Naw, wasn't thinking canadian....
If it came with a lot of cool stuff I might spend $80-$90 on it. It really depends.
But that's really the upper limit, wouldn't dream of spending more on it. I'm already planning on purchasing a DX9 card. Once the next set of video cards come out the current prices should drop, then I'll get one. Or i"ll see what's a good value once HL2 shows up for preloading. ;)
Not only for HL2, but still. The one I want first.

The last version of Microsoft Office required internet verification much in the same way steam verifies that your games are legit. That's one of the main purposes of steam, combating piracy.

But hey, like I said before, you can't please everyone. But have fun being all paranoid about it the rest of your life because if you think valve is the only company that's going to do this then your wrong. They're just the pioneers. Now that broad band is becoming the internet standard you will definitely start to see MUCH more programs incorporating internet integration in the same way steam does.

But in the end I don't see why you continue to post here. You've amassed over 50+ posts on site dedicated to what you call a "silly computer game" and it's blatently obvious that your not going to even play it because you WILL have to use steam if you want to use HL2.
