RAGE

Interesting, looks like they stylized the graphics a lot more since last time. Almost looks like Borderlands...
Is Rage an RPG and Sandbox?

Not too interested, but I was impressed at 4:36 when the bandit kicks the turret.

The spider bot thing was pretty awesome, but the rest of it... meh. It looks like its got no atmosphere whatsoever. Just looks like a slightly above average shoot-em-up. I like that the enemies aren't necessarily dead when they fall down too. I'd play this over COD or Bulletstorm any day.

It looks pretty bad. There's no appeal. I like the turret thing, but that was already done, and better in many video games. It's a console shooter with useless role-playing elements and bad artificial intelligence. At least we get a level editor, but I don't see anyone modding for this game.

Seems fine to me. The gameplay looks streets ahead of Borderlands, not that that's hard, and more interesting than CoD, and I like the look and setting. If co-op works well i'll be picking this up.

Ugh... I was looking forward to it, but my interest just plummeted after seeing this.
A few things:

The graphics. The exterior parts look good, however the interiors, characters and weapons look no better than something out of Doom 3 or Quake 4...
The gameplay. Aside from little quirks like the remote explosive toy car, or the mad max style racing, it looks just as mediocre and stale as Doom 3 or Quake 4 were.
The weapon sounds. It seems both Id and their buddies Raven have a bad habit of making horrendous weapon sounds. That sharp annoying machinegun sound almost made my ears bleed, and the shotgun sound is just as bad.

Thank **** at least for the moding part, with some proper modifications it might actually be enjoyable.

Same for both of those titles--they're hardly benchmarks.

What is? The bar's been pretty low for single player fps action for years now. To me this looks better than most, with the added bonus of co-op and a setting I like.

Warbie's a console gamer. *chuckle*

What recent PC exclusive FPS do you mean he's missed out on?

I mainly game on consoles because of shitty PC and I still disagree with him, my most liked FPS of recent years(ignoring Portal 2) is Metro 2033, which also is post-apocalyptic in setting just like RAGE.

It looks beyond boring.

The spider bot slides across the ground instead of walking. Even Doom 3's was better. The bit where the guy kicked the turret was awful - he stands there looking at it for an hour.

In what way?

I'll bite. What are these great single player shooters i've been missing out on recently.

Bah :p I've ranked up far more hours on PC games over the years.

In what way?

From the few gameplay clips i've seen I like the pace of some of the enemies, how they jump and flip about. There's one vid with a big beast that can charge, knocking cars out the way, and has some sort of ranged tongue attack - I like stuff like that. There's nothing super original, but it looks much better than the CoDs of this world, and if they keep the gameplay fast, the bad guys varied, and give us a wide range of standard and exotic weapons, i'll be happy.

It definitely looks like id trying to recreate Borderlands to me. I probably won't buy it. It just looks like fluff.

The same old thing. But all first person shooters look the same to me.

The emphasis on slower combat, and external weapons and hardware is interesting, and the spider-bot's activity was pretty cool. Unfortunately the game definitely reeks of 90's design, in the sense that the design of various parts of the world is arbitrarily gothic, and overall lacks a fundamental coherence. The tech looks fantastic, but as far as the actual game part goes, everything is just sort of there to tick a box on a feature list. I don't expect to get this game for any reason other than mods, a year after release.

Im getting it to see what such a long development cycle gets it, even with a new engine getting developed alongside

I like the part with the worn out desert aesthetic and rugged stylized characters

Looking a bit better, but I still get this very linear feeling from it.

I'm getting a Wolfenstein feeling from it, in the sense that you have an annoying hub city that you go through over and over again, and small cramped missions.
Not impressed.

Ah, I haven't played Wolfenstein, but I can already imagine what you are talking about. Something about RAGE did not seem open world.

I am guessing it will be as 'open world' as Borderlands was.

I haven't been watching RAGE developments too often, but it is a game that I will pick up purely that its a ID-Bethesda game, freeform, Mario Karts and its post-apocalyptic

I do believe rage is freeform, I think funniling all the action in canyons is a good way of optimizing the game by culling unseen vertices

I hate Borderlands open world, with endless respawning and no sense of accomplishment, there should be once and for all a real division of sandbox and open world. What would be awesome is if you could actually change the environment by clearing out an area and use it as a base.

Im buying this just for the long development cycle and the box art. Seriously what focus group of retards in the mid 90s bitched so loudly about box art that now every dumb ass publisher takes it as fact that an American release must have the stupid characters taking up the whole cover and nothing else, Id like to kill them

I don't think you know how games work, Tim.

In fairness, id haven't known how games work for quite some time now.

They seem very confident that people won't want to trade in their game.

"But I know some consumers, when you can't avoid it, then you get a little touchy subject."

He is as good at English as he is at making gameplay decisions.
