I have this weird stroke-ish tendency to let my torso sag to the left and not draw in my left ribcage. This has become slowly and progressively worse over the past few years. I think it's starting to give me a slightly misshapen spine. And over the past few months, my heart has started to hurt a little bit. I plan on seeing a doctor soon, but I wonder if this torso-sagging and ribcage-relaxing is putting pressure on my heart. When I consciously straighten my back and sit properly, the slight discomfort and sensation of pressure in my chest diminishes, and drawing in my left ribcage seems to alleviate the pain.

So long story short: Can bad posture cause negative effects in your vital organs?

Don't think so about vitals*. But definitely muscles.

*I'm a student Jim, not a doctor.

granted im no doctor, but i dont think bad posture would damage your organs... you might have muscle aches and pains, but that's about it. But if your posture is reeeally off and/or you are overweight, I guess it is possible it could lead to some issues.

"Damage" was probably the wrong word. And the heart is a muscle, so I guess that would fall under muscle pain :p

Pah. Your heart isn't affected by movement.

I've been through worse. Like that time I got dragged behind a truck on a dirt road.

holy shit this is happening to me too (if i interpret what you wrote correctly). I lean far too much on my left side when i sit down, sagging my body down the chair and let all the torso weight pressure the upper left area. I often get heartaches (even tho im not fat at all) and i occasionally get intense muscle pain in my torso, just random muscles. Sometime i lean so much its as if my torso is twisting 200 degrees (im a mutant)

But its SOOOOO comfortable to lean that way, because then i can turn my chair and put my legs up on the bed while im on the computer. Uber awesome position. Would be better with a hot girl riding me at the same time, but i leave that to imagination.

I too sag myself down to the left when i sit down. :o

What is it about the left side?

Exactly. Exactly that. And that's the problem, it's too damn comfortable to be leaning like that in a chair, or couch, or bed. You just sit there with your body half-catatonic, supporting your weight on the arm of the chair with pretty much no effort at all. Stupid chairs

At least I know I'm not the only one getting these torso-induced heartaches.

Sit up straight you maggots.

Every time I slouch my pops punches me in the heart and tells me to stand up straight, so I don't know what these people are on about saying that posture can't affect your organs, clearly they have no idea

When I have chest pains I punch myself where my heart would be.

It seems to help! The pain goes away! Your father is protecting you.

is it like a steven hawking kind of posture or something? take a picture of yourself, clothes optional.

yes is bad for your organs

your testicles will explode

I'm pretty sure it's just muscular pain, not heart pain.

You can experience pain from your ribs if you tilt far to the side and twist and shit. I was laying on my side with my head propped up to watch TV - twisted all up like shit - I actually internally injured myself slightly, but it was gone in the morning. It was pretty ridiculous.

Also, god damn, relax.
