My WiFi connection from my laptop keeps ****ing up. It works fine, then it disconnects. So I try to connect manually using the Windows Wifi thing and it says "Connecting to network..." and it just hangs for a couple of minutes and the window closes.

It's not my router because I tried connecting to an unsecure network and it did the exact same thing. I'm currently using Ubuntu as it seems that XP has screwed up somewhere.

Hard to diagnose easily. When it drops, how do you get it back on? Do you have to wait a while and then it starts working again, or reboot the laptop or what?

Also, check if your wifi tool has some power saving setting that disables the connection after x amount of time.

I have the same thing with my girlfriends wlan. Some times it works like a charm. Then some times it just disconnects randomly, like every 2min or so. Then after a while it starts working normaly. No idea what causes it.

D-Link router by any chance?

If so throw that shit out and get a linksys.

When you say you can't connect to an unsecured network are you sure that this is actually a network you can connect to from other computers? A lot of business networks that seem unsecured are in reality secured using RADIUS or other authentication schemes that don't require a key to be entered but won't let unauthenticated people connect.

Yes, I have a D-Link router and the unsecure network was called "default" so I assume it was setup by someone without technical know-how.

It's definitely Windows that is causing the problems because I tried Ubuntu and the WiFi connection worked without a hitch.

See if you can get the latest windows drivers for your wireless card. Also updated your d-link firmware to the latest version.

Are you able to connect to the unsecured network with Ubuntu? If not I still wouldn't rule out a problem with the dlink router. These are the biggest pieces of shit ever made. I've had the same issue as you on 2 different d-link routers and switching to a linksys router, after both dlink routers died on me right as the warranty ended, solved all my problems.

I never tried the unsecure network in Ubuntu. Anyway...my WiFi has been working fine all day. :\

Okay, I permanently assigned to IP address it usually retrieves and everything is honky-dory. :D
