what should I save them to?
every time I download an RAR file and try to open it,I get a message that says Windows cannot open the file because it needs to know what program created it
what do I do with them?

Use winrar. I believe winzip will work too, but not sure.

I use winrar.

You'll also often find that rar files are split up into numerous files... with the extentions such as .001 .002 .003 .004 etc. Opening just one of those files, as long as you have all the files in the series, will allow you to see the entire contents of what's being zipped, and you only have to extract it once, not each time for each file in the series.

Here's a list of applications that support the file format. The external links section at the bottom.

thanks Raz!,I notice that you help me alot...
1 question though, when I downloaded WinRar,it said it was a trial, but it looks like the full version, and I haven't gotten any "this is how many days you have before your trial expires" messages

As far as I'm aware, even though it is a trial you can still use it well beyond the trial date. I remember using it like that in the past.

I'm not sure though. If you go up to help and click about winrar, maybe it'll tell you how many days of trial you have left. Or whenever you start the program it should. It's been a long time since I've used the trial version... so I just don't know. Sorry.

There are other programs in that link I gave, some of them free rar programs so if you ever wanted to use something else.

I will after 40 days,just checked,says its a 40 day free trial

It will simply give you a message saying
"Please note that WinRAR is not free software. After a 40 day trial period you must either buy a license or remove it from your computer."

There are 4 buttons on that message window and one is to CLOSE the message window. But WinRAR will still work. go figure
