I picked this game up yesterday and it's hooked me in hardcore. I've skipped 3 classes, work and have spent 11+ hours on this one.

If you think this game is just some platformer you couldn't be more wrong. Take platform + adventure + shooter + fun weapons + widely varying gameplay + rpg elements + fun multiplayer = Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal.

Any PS2 owners out there owe this game at least a renting.

First off, one of the best aspects of this game if you ask me is the rpg elements worked in. For each enemy you kill you gain some experience. Once you fill your xp bar you get 1 more health point. All weapons are upgradable as well. The more you kill with a weapon the more you level it up. Each level will make the weapon more powerful and possibly give you lock-on, charge shots, or some other ability (a chain lightning ability, flaming shots, bouncing attacks, additional lock-on targets, etc - it depends on the weapon). Each weapon has 5 levels to upgrade through. These elements alone merit another play through the game (you start with all your equipment when you start again).

Another awesome aspect of this game is the varying gameplay. The meat of the game is you running around as Ratchet with Clank on your back shooting all kinds of bad guys. There are also fun side-scrolling sections (as Qwark), spaceship battles (your ship can be upgraded too), big godzilla-type battles (as Clank), vehicle fights, etc.

Not only is this game an awesome SP experience, but new with UYA is a sweet MP mode available for online play. The best mode is siege mode. It's a 4v4 game where each team fights over objective points - some of which give you turrets, vehicles, bot support, spawn points, weapons, etc - the overall goal being to destroy the enemy base. I have had a blast playing this game online for a few hours...but I decided I want to finish the SP game at least once first before playing much more online.

Other sweet things about UYA are side-missions. There's an arena in the game where there are numerous (optional) challenges to face, some of them arena fighting, some of them obstacle death-courses. These events of course will net you a ton of bolts (the game's currency) to buy weapons and ammo, get new armor or upgrade your ship. There are also numerous scenarious (most optional) where you must defend or attack a base fighting with robot marines. Not only is there tons of incentive to leave the main story from time to time to try and get everything, but once you finally finish the game, you can start over with your same equipment. You'll pretty much have to play through a second time in order to get the best armor (it runs 1,000,000 bolts) unless you plan to spend a lot of time just fighting in levels you've already beaten.

I'm not totally sure because I haven't beaten it yet, but if it's like R&C: Going Commando (the 2nd game in the series) then the 2nd time around not only is the game harder (designed for your arsenal of upgraded powerful weapons) but you get a bolt multiplier. As you kill more and more guys your multiplier will increase netting you tons of extra bolts. When you get hit the multiplier will reset. This will help you save for an expensive weapon or that 1,000,000 bolt armor.

All I can say is TRY THIS GAME at least. It's only $40 now. I traded in God of War (beat it twice) and payed only $7 for this awesome game...back to it :)

Up your Arsenal is a great game, everyone should try it out. I have yet to complete it though, got stuck on some level which I can't remember.

Btw, Insomniac Games are working on another Ratchet too, named Ratchet: Deadlocked. Some videos can be found here.

Co-op baby. :)

Hm, hard choice... Both are great games, but I would likely to choose Ratchet & Clank though.

But if you are after a hard and long game, Jak II or III are the choice as the R&C series are pretty easy and not that long IMO.

yea i remember hearing 1 of them was more hard etc,so thats jak3,which has more replay value,mini-games,isnt 1 of them supposed to be quite open ended and non-linear in terms of environments?

Jak II and III are definitly less linear, but they do have their share of pain-in-the-ass segments, unlike Ratchet and Clank which is streamlined to perfection. I'd also have to say that Ratchet has more replay value with its Challenge mode. That doesn't make Jak a bad game, it just makes Ratchet and incredibly one.

i heard jak3 takes place in like a lil city hub and you can wander around and explore etc?

Jak II has that too. However, the city is a real drag in Jak II and theres nothing interesting to do, coupled with the fact that the vehicles are intensely frustrating.
Jak III allows you to explore two seperate towns and also the gigantic "wasteland" where you get to roar around in any one of a few different dune buggys.

I loved Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal. The only thing I didn't like was how the multiplayer was done. (Like splitting the 2 player splitscreen into 4 parts, the 1st player in the top left corner, and the 2nd player in the opposite corner, and the entire other half of the screen area is left blank. They could have at least put the mini map there or something.)

Whats the point? World of Warcraft is the best game and the only game I need for the time been :P

cool, but i shouldnt be expecting grand theft auto style size

No, although the second Jak (and by proxy the third) was clearly influenced by it.

I totally forgot the cooler aspects of challenge mode...there's the RYNO and more upgrades for every weapon! I don't think this game is all that short. I've played 13 hours of SP now and I still haven't beaten it. I think I'm close though. Whelp, back to it.
