GTA: Chinatown Wars

This game is fantastic. Really, much better than my high expectations.

First of all think of the original GTA games. Now pan the camera back a touch and add an amazingly good looking cell shaded liberty city that's teeming with cars, pedestrians, bikes, and cops. That's what it looks like. Now cram in everything that's been fun about the GTA series from the first to no. 4 and remove the boring and repetitive stuff. Now you get some idea how it plays. There is no downtime in Chinatown Wars. It's been refined, honed, and there's always something to keep you engaged. The controls, once you get used to running around and car handling (it's different to GTA 1 & 2), are great. You'll be zooming around the city and weaving through traffic in 10 minutes. The addtion of the stylus into gameplay is even better. My heart sinks as much as anybody's when it comes to the tacked on stylus mini games that plague so many DS titles, but this is not at all the case here. They couldn't be less tacked on. While these new gameplay elements are not intergral to the GTA experience, the game would certainly be worse without them.

*quickly opens a dumpster, throws out rubbish bags and finds stashed gun*

The drug dealing element to Chinatown Wars has been mentioned in most reviews. It's partly this that means there's always something to do (I suspect every GTA from now on will have something similar). Think Dope Wars, but actually fun. There's dealers all over the city and nearly always a rush to get drug x to dealer y before z happens. This'll likely be your main source of income. Sometimes the deal goes smooth, sometimes the cops will come flying in and try to ruin everything. This brings me to the cops. Forget running away or going to the spray shop (you can still do this if you lack testicles), now we get to **** them up. If you have a wanted level of two (two little cop car icons on the top right), you can get away by destroying two cop cars that are chasing you. This puts a very nice twist on affairs - you'll still be running away as they can pull you out of cars easier than ever and bust you, but now you're ramming them into walls at high speeds and generally smacking them about. How you like me now piggy?!

The PDA has also been much improved.Toggling between emails, contacts, the map, sat nav, plotting routes etc is seemless. It is MUCH better with stylus control. Navigating to and from missions, to dealers, or any location, is a breeze. You'll never have trouble finding the safehouse/s, which is where you save the game, stash drugs, cars, and replay any mission you like on the notice board (another great additon I suspect every GTA will adopt). The missions, so far, are more varied than previous games in the series. One of my major gripes with GTA 4 (other than the slow pace, silly levels of downtime and babysitting missions), was the lack of variety in missions. There's still the usual go here and do that, or get here before the time runs out etc, but now there's more variety - from throwing boxes off the back of a lorry into a following truck to sabotauging a street race by taking out competitors so a friend can win. All the staple and fun distractions are still here too - rampage missions and stunts are present and correct.

Of course, some things have been lost with the move to the DS. Mostly cosmetic - the radio now simply plays music and the cool cutscenes from GTA 4 have been replaced with comic book storyboards - and nothing that detracts from the experience. For example, the pace of GTA4 is suited to driving around, taking in the sights and listening to the radio. The pace of Chinatown Wars isn't. There's pigs to kill and drugs to sell!

In short, Chinatown Wars is everything a fan of GTA 1 & 2 could want. It's expanded on that formula and borrowed much of the sophistication from the later games, which is why fans of those games will love it too. As a sandbox game it works much better than GTA4 and the story missions are every bit as good, if not better. There are minor niggles - pushing R won't always lock onto the target you want and sometimes you have to manually center the camera (L button) as it's at the wrong angle - but these are very minor and eclipsed by everything the game does so right. Quality wise we're talking Nintendo flagship game levels of polish and there is little doubt in my mind that this is the best game on the DS and a strong goty contender. For me, after two days of play, it's the closest Rockstar have got to the perfect GTA. See, we can have a good mission based GTA that is also a good fast and frantic sandbox game.

10/10

Might & Magic: Dark Messiah (single player)

Good environmental combat (if sometimes rather silly), interesting enough charcters and story (with that fantastically obvious plot twist), multiple endings as well as choices that affect how the game plays out to a small degree. Class balance is less that ideal. However, it looks pretty and is quite alot of fun. Theres much to be said for finding new and interesting ways for your enemies to fall to thier deaths. :)

8.5/10

Resident evil 5 7.5/10

I want to give this an 8 but I can't.

It's fun yes but it is too short (longer than RE4 my ass), there's quite a few occasions where you can killed really cheaply even on the lower difficulties, some of the bosses can be really quite confusing as to what to do at first and lastly the obvious one every one mentions it is WAY too similar to RE4.

Unlike RE4 I suppose at least the plot has actually got to do with Resi now. BTW wesker is so badass :)

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that for a game that closes off such a huge story arc in the resi franchise the ending is not the most satisfying :|

People *****ed about fallout 3's ending constantly I'm surprised no one has said anything about this :|

Oddworld pack. 9/10. I picked these up and they immediately sucked me in and transported me to my childhood. These games hold up remarkably well, if you enjoy puzzle platformers get these now. Its only like 4 bucks for both.

Call Of Duty 4 - Veteran Difficulty - 6/10

Its awesome.

But god damn, you are given absolutely NO ROOM for mistake. You have to memorise where each guy is, where they spawn etc, and you have to starting shooting before you lean around a corner like in paintball.

Its almost TOO hard in some places, made me frustrated.

Oh and on the last chapter when youre in the silo, it saved the game right as a guy popped out infront of me from behind a box, killing me with his laser..sorry, AK. So it the reloaded the game from that point, I think I died about 20 times before a timed burst from me brought him to one knee and he didnt kill me. Come on, think better when it comes to checkpoints!

Left 4 Dead-9/10

Just got yesterday and played with a few friends. Very fun co-op, and very tense. The witch soundtrack scares the shit out of me. Also, I love the Church guy. A lot.

Resident Evil 5-7/10

Pales in comparison. The voice acting kinda sux, and the controls are a little iffy. Am I the only one who wanted to jam a damn fork into Irving's vocal cords? Christ, he sounded like a mix of Gilbert Goddfrey and a dying animal with rabies.

I lost a good deal of sanity completing that on veteran. It was even worse on CoD 5, I have a fear of grenades now.

Gears of War 2.

presentation: 9/10
gameplay 6.5/10
fun factor: 3/10

god it was painfully boring ..to the point where my friend looked at me and said "lets just play castle crashers"

Sheepo has been playing a lot of games:

Super Mario Galaxy 9/10
This game has so many awesome concepts and ideas it makes me sad to see them used so little. I want more Matter Splatter, more Space Junk, more giant rotating cylinders of liquid hot death! This game is so immensely fun and right in every aspect, it's just that there's not enough. I would pay for a sequel that was just 150 stars with concepts taken from the coolest levels of the game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 8.5/10
Man, I don't know if it's my Wii classic controller or just becoming accustomed to easier games, but this is hard as balls. Still just as magical and fun as I remember from the good ol' days though.

Portal 10/10
God it's great. The narrative gets you sucked in so well and the puzzles are still fresh and fun.

Street Fighter 4 7/10
Admittedly, I'm not a Street Fighter player and never have been. It's fun to play with friends once you find characters you're semi-competent with. Bolrag for me, lol.

The Club 8/10

Easy to get into and fun tp play, although the story could be fleshed out a lttle more.

Dragov FTW.

Cryostasis- 9/10

Very Eerie and innovative. Along with Dead Space, it is one of the better horror games of the recent years. The storytelling, characters etc. was very well translated.
Kudos to the Ukrainian developers. It's a shame that nobody out there is praising it.
I enjoyed it very much.

Pokeman Platinum 100000000000000/10

Shit rocks.
My ****ing Glaceon has a higher Sp. Atk than Giratina yet it's like 14 levels lower
HOLY SHIT

It's out already? What the shit.

Hmm. Good response, I was wanting to try this out but then PC gamer UK gave it a 40% :|

I'm trying to finish up Killzone 2 but I'm playing on the second highest difficulty setting. If I had COD controls I could have finished this game twice by now. It feels like I'm trying to tie a knot it full body Halloween costume in the dark

Left 4 Dead-6/10 Not great but Versus is addicting

Filled with glitches and annoyances

Wallace And Gromit - The Fright Of The Bumbelbees - 9/10

Very well done, with the endearing feeling the show and film have, Telltale have placed it into their game and made it feel part of the same media. The graphics look amazing, with little clay imperfections in their skin, and the animations and facial expressions given by the characters are spot on, especially Gromit, who needs these to show his current thinking as he cannot speak.
My only problem is that some of the puzzles were a little easy, but every first game telltale make in a series suffers with this, but it always improves.

Vin Diesels Wheelman - 7.5/10 (so far)

Not played much, but so far, in the time I've had with it, the gameplay seems solid but arcadey (which is not strictly a bad thing, just different if anyone was expecting a GTA clone), Vin looks like Vin, the controls are good (as long as you use a 360 pad, Keyboard is not changeable) and some of the gameplay elements are quite nice, such as having controls to ram left and right, or spin your car 180 in slow mo and fire from the window in fps mode.
Only thing is that so far, the money earning side missions seem pointless as I have not yet had to buy anything.

Wanted - Weapons Of Fate - 7.5/10

Decent arcade shooter with some great cover mechanics and bullet bending trickery. Nice graphics and controls. A shame most of the cut scenes are pretty low res bink files which somewhat spoils the atmosphere, especially since some of them are done in engine, so it shows it is possible, just lazy on the part of the devs.

Dark Sector - 7/10

Played a few levels so far, fought past the shitty sewer mutants etc. I have no idea why I am finding this game fun, with it bad cover system, stretched 16:10 graphics and erratic AI, but for some reason I am finding it fun. I like the Glaive idea, and it's pretty well done, plus the controls are actually pretty decent (shit to setup on keyboard though as everytime you change a control in the menu, it lags for about 5 seconds before you can do the next).
Graphics are good for an old console game too.

Wallace and Gromit looks fantastic. Yeah Dark Sector just has this charm to it. Should have stuck to the original concept though.

The Darkness - 9/10

Dead Space - 9/10

Having started playing this ages ago, I gave in because it was running like shite on my system and the keyboard controls were horrible. I had gotten to the bit when you beat the Regenerator. I left it on my drive thinking I'll get back round to it when the usual mid-year games draught begins. Then a week ago, I got a horrible virus that disabled my system restore and stopped my internet access from working. It was format time. Unfortunately I lost all my saves for everything (Fallout 3, I'm ****ed if I'm starting that again), so I re-installed Dead Space ready to give it another shot, this time using my 360 pad. I'll be damned if after my format the game isn't running like a dream, 70-80 fps at all times, and I have changed nothing in my PC since I played it last. So anyway, I've just left Medical for the first time and am really enjoying it, and now, the atmosphere is really getting to me since I'm not worrying about the frames, scary as hell. Far superior to RE4 in every way, and RE5 for that matter.

FEAR 2: 6/10

Meh..not even as good as the first game. The only good level was the school level, the rest were meh..

Did they actually get Peter Sallis to do the voice of Wallace? He sounds a little off...

Nope, it's his TV show back up actor, it bothered my at first, but after 10 mins playing, I didn't give it a second thought. I can understand why they couldn't get Sallis, with the amount of dialogue involved for the series and given Peter's age. Besides, When Peter gives up the TV Show, this is the guy who will take over.

Company of Heroes mp - awesome/10

Just played a 3v3 game with a couple of friends, Het Scheldt VP. Oh the joy. Very cramped map with a couple of obvious choke points. Our opponents, playing ze Germans, managed to cut us off the important middle ground. While we were capping the victory point and some essential ammo and fuel points there, they cut us off with sandbags and tank barriers. Luckily though I had a well placed MG in a house overlooking half of the middle ground and a mortar team and later a tank keeping guard of the other half. The Hun kept coming, wave after wave, but they never managed to get those points back. Eventually we got rid of the tank barriers, I moved in my tank force, and from then on it was a walk over. This game still is one of the best online games period. Hopefully the next expansion isn't too centered around that direct action gimmick.

Wheelman Demo: .../10

I am really unsure on how to rate this. On the one hand, I want to say that this game is AWFUL. The driving controls arent great, there are tons of inconsistencies (teleporting out of the car, things getting blown away before any explosion occurs), shoddy graphics and limited demonstration of the "open world" gameplay the game is supposed to be BASED on.

On the other hand, it is genuinely one of the most inadvertaintly hilarious games I've played in a while. The unrealistic moves you can pull are pure awesome, and somehow just mesh with the inconsistencies to make it all entertaining. The physics breaks at times, but I always find broken physics funny. Finally, although most of the voice acting is bad, NO-ONE can bash Vin Diseals voice, that alone partially redeems the game.

CoH gave me the single greatest strategy gaming moment of all my years of playing, through a LAN game.

Me and a friend vs 2 x yanks, on that map that has the beach-head at the southern part of the map.

We dominated, then something when madly wrong for us, and we got pushed back to the point of only having our HQs, no points captured, being bombarded and swarmed, tanks and infantry being destroyed seconds after they get built...

Then along come 3 panzers and 1 king tiger from behind the HQ, and we swept over the map with them.

It sounds dull, but if you couldve watched the replay we saved, it was seriously unbelievable.

CoH - 1000/10

Indeed CoH is definately one of the greatest online games out at the moment, but my router decided it doesn't like it and I can't join any games now. Sucks so much ass :(

EVE Online - 10/10
Boring as hell if you're mining, but if it's with friends and you're laughing, it's amazingly fun.

CoD: World at War Demo - Eh

Well now I know I wasn't missing much. Felt like CoD 3 but very slightly prettier and with japs. It's kind of pathetic they still haven't moved past the mechanic of the entire conflict only moving on if you yourself advance, even though you're not even the squad commander.

It's ****ing shit. The whole game. The MP not as much, but then it's filled with shit. Just stay away.

That's one of best aspects of this game: a match isn't over until it's over. A few weeks ago I played another 3v3, Hill 331 this time, and the game was basically in the bag. The other team had three points left on their VP countdown timer and my team was already razing the enemy bases to the ground. But because of a last minute push our opponents captured two of the three vp's and managed to hold on to them. Epic match.
