K, anyone know what rates I should be running for CS:S cos all I ever get is loads of choke and or constant freezing every now and then. Im pretty sure it isnt due to PC or connection as my average fps is 100 and avaerge ping is 20. cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate are both 101 rate is 20000. kthxbye

those are the rates I use... i think it's just that there are a whole load of terrible servers out there...

what do you get for loss and choke when you do net_graph 3?

Choke is can be anything from 3 to 30 constantly I only get loss when first joining a server.

lol no its a Protoss High Templar off Starcraft, but I used to play Warhammer about 8 years ago.

Still havent fixed this so so ill add that when I freeze all the corpses of people who have died on the map are warped to where I am and I still move while frozen because when I unfreeze I suddenly appear at the wall I was facing at the time. umm err ohh and for some reason it looks like Im rebuying everything when I unfreeze. Hope someone knows a fix for this... kthxbye

yeah its prob just bad servers, btw how do u get your fps to show up in the upper right hand corner? i totally forgot the command

Hmm if you having stupid freezing every 5-10 seconds where you just lag out for half a second, then it's fine again, the it freezes with lag and everyones running on the spot, then your dead...etc. - What happened with me was I set cl_smooth to 0 and the problem has gone. Every time I started CS:S If I didn't change it to '0' I would have the same problem. Try it out :)

to sho your fps in the upper right corner, use cl_showfps "1" or "2"
2- gives you a more "smoothed" version of fps that is likely an average of x frames and is a little easier to read than 1.

most of these problems are caused by shitty servers (only few good servers online atm) but like JiMmEh said it can also be caused by the source engine... I have 2Mb connection and still have those payneintheass lag spikes, I have to try cl_smooth 0 option or wait until thursday untill my 12Mb connection comes and try again with that... if the problem is still there, then it's because of crappy beta.. I mean alpha released source :dozey:

Change the cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to it´s defult values and you will be fine...
the cl_utdaterate and cl_cmdrate in CS:S i different than the cs 1.6 rates...
So if you have 101 in those rate it´s like beging for lag..
Hope that helped you.. :D

Edit: If you have cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate over 40 it will lag and you will get loss and choke.

I tried cl_smooth 0 yesterday... didnt help at all...

I've seen numerous threads where info about rates etc has been posted but no info on these questions:-
A) How do I find out what the various rates are set at currently.
and
B) Can these be put into the autoexec.cfg so they don't have to be entered every time.

Thanks!

A)just type the command, without a value (eg.: rate)
B)yes

also, to set your rates correctly:
-type net_graph 3 in console
-set cl_cmdrate to half your fps
-set cl_updaterate to 20
-up your rate 5 by 5 until just before there is loss (don't go above 20000)
-up your cl_updaterate 5 by 5 until just before there is choke (don't go above 40)

buy a scout and test it on a live server.

you have just entered your perfect rates.

Thanks element, I'll give it a go tomorrow, once a replacement power pack is sent to me (there was a huge power problem in my area and it seems to have killed my laptop's power pack)

Incidentally, your post seems to suggest that I change these figures outwith a "live" server, and instead on a locally created server. Is that correct?

yes, of course. Rates, cl_updaderate and cl_cmdrate are commands that determine the rate at wich you send data to a server. On a listenserver all those commands are meaningless, and on a lan game you can go higher because it's just faster, so your pc can send out more packets per second. You should never put those values too high because it stresses the connection. You'll see (when using net_graph) that your kb/s in and out will go up when you set your rates higher.

Try to find a server with a good ping to set your rates. Meaning a server with a ping equal to those you usually play on.

Ive got problems too, high ping and loads of loss, someone suggested to lower the hl.exe priority in the process management thyis loweres my ping from 150 to 39 and makes CS run somewhat better but still got loss. Try it as an intermediate solution, Im still looking for the definate one
