Rates, rates and more rates?

OK what is it with Rates? What does this magic setting do and how does it effect the gameplay?

I keep seeing people getting kicked for having bad rates and I also see people owning on servers being asked "what rates are you using?"

Also how do I change my Rates? is there several settings or is it once particular setting I should change?

Rates are the amount of packets your computer sends to the server (and vice versa for the server). The reason you see so many people getting kicked and asked is because of rate hacking.

If you think about it, the default rate is 9999 - steam sets that at the start. It's ok, but if you set your rate to about 100, then that's how many packets are sent to the server (I don't know of the time scale, could be a second I think) and so the server has to guess where the guy is going to be inbetween the packets. If he changes direction in a way the server wouldn't guess, and people shoot at where the server "thinks" the player is, then it will miss.

That's why people who own a lot tend to get asked, because they seem not to be killed often.

I'm on a 1Mbit line, and my rate is 20000.
I can't really think of much else...

Thanks. Done a search but it's quite hard filtering out any usefull information as loads of threads come up. Will endeavor to look more though
