I've just played through the entirity of Ravenholm and been left in the caves, and I must say it was by far the scariest gaming experience I've ever had. I've played Doom 3's demo, and a few other parts with a friend and I must say, Ravenholm's unpredictability and speedy zombies made it much, much worse.

aparently you have never played any real scary games.

Doom 3 was much scarier! Ravenholm wasn't really "scary" like that, it had an eerie atmosphere, but it wasn't "scary". Doom 3, at least for me, gave me constant discomfort, with occasional scares!

agree, doom 3 was scarier than ravenholm, but it was still not a scary game.

I never once found my self scared in doom 3, its not because its not a scary game, its because i dont get scared bieng in the dark and having things jump out you in cramped corridors. I felt extremley bored.

I wasnt scared by ravenholm either, it was however scarier than doom 3. The sounds, the music, the sense of isolation.

Ravenholm wasn't scary it was just creepy.

The Razortrains are far far more scarier! Fear them.

IF you mean the traps that chop the zombies in half - for me, they were the comic relief! :D

He means the nova prospekt trains...i think

How is a train scary?

Anyway, I found both Doom 3 and Ravenholm to be very scary, but doom 3 was worse, and stressed me out so much that I can't even play it. Ravenholm was the right 'scariness'... if that makes sense.

Children, children. Come now, if we'd all done our gaming homework we'd realize that Ravenholm, albiet creepy, is not scary. Now, I admit it is a bit old, but Sytem Shock 2 is the scariest game every conceived by mankind. Do yourself a favor and play it.

Its called peoples opinions, you will find that someone may find ravenholm to be scarier than system shock 2...someone may even find doom 3 scarier than system shock 2..or vice versa.

Granted system shock 2 is a somewhat scary game, but its all down to soemones opinion.

As an opinion, they are all valid, as an interesting thread, they all suck.

Dear god, Mike. We meet again... :stare:

doom 3 was very predictable and repetitive, it didn`t scare me even once

but ravenholm...

The Silent hill series are the scariest games ever made (exept Silent hill 4 maby).

My opinion? Yes, but they really are much scarier than Ravenholm, Doom 3 and system shock 2, together. Most of you have probably not tryed them, but trust me, i know what im talking about here.

Yes it was a mining town inhabited by some city 17 refugees
and the combine concentrated launching headcrabs in that area compared to the other places? why? :smoking:

They noticed the C17 residents escaping there...and then left it to rot

Hey guys this is my first post on the forum but I'm another guy who thinks Doom 3 was not as scary as Ravenholm. In fact I was playing through Ravenholm again the other night and thats exactly what I thought in my head.. "This is so much scarier than Doom 3". I think the sound effects are a LOT better and scarier than Doom 3. The entire Half Life 2 music and sound effects always has you buggin out like "God what was that noise!!!" or "OMG their coming!!".. Doom 3 was more like "ZzZzZzzZzzzzzz"
Plus I used to play Doom 3 in the dark and I never really got scared.. I play Half Life 2 and damn am I scared to hell, I have to take a break every few hours just because my nerves get so fried.

Oh yeah and the Combine probably shot the headcrab missles into tons of towns like Ravenholm.. you don't need to go through every single one to know that.. Ravenholm was just the town you had to pass through, but I'm sure there are many similar towns you dont get to see.

Hondo = tru dat.

Doom 3 is not scary AT ALL. Tremendously badass at points, but scary, NO WAY. Ravenholm was not so much scary persay as scarier than Doom 3. The Cradle is a frikin nightmare. So awesome. Dude, it was even scary in the daytime (sort of).

i think that ravenholm is one of the scariest places on a game ive played on. however, i have not played on doom 3 so my opinion is biased. it is even more scary when u have no ammo and little health and are relying on the gravity gun to pick up fire extinguishars to fire at the enemy! lol

scariness meter

silent hill 1 > hl2 > barbies magical adventure > doom1 > doom 3

Damn... HL2 w/c has only one very scary level has beaten Doom 3 w/c has more than 10+ scary levels. Valve should make a Horror game soon... they're good at it...

Ravenholm was gross but not the scariest. In fact after playing it in the demo using the traps to dismember the enemy was one of the things that got me to buy this game. I think the biggest scare for me in this game was in Route Canal. I can't remember where i was exactly but there was a pipe with a dead end, it was dark and as i reached the end where there was a supply box a zombie popped up and started crawling towards me after that I kind of expected something like that everytime I got to some dark corner or hole. As for doom3 I only have the demo so far and so far it seems to have an element of fear to it however i have heard that it gets quite repetative around the middle of the game but later on gets really good.

Sleestacks are the scariest of all time, evah...

:dork:

What are razortrains?

The Ravenholm could be a lot more scarier, if the headcrabs attacked like facehuggers in AvP - 1 hit = kill. I'd run from the computer if it was so (as I've done in AvP =)

well, there was one headcrab that can take 99 of ur life in just one hit... though ur HEV miraculously regenrates ur life though since its only a neurotoxin... was it?

That wouldnt make for fun gameplay now would it ? :)

I didnt mean to be critical and put down other opinions. I did find Ravenholm a bit nervewracking the way zombies and headcrabs would just leap at you in total darkness with a 2 foot radius light as your only form of vision. But still, I think SS2 is way scarier than anything I've ever played/watched. The way they incoporated sound/desperate feeling/helplessness truly made you fear what was around the corner. I realy suggest people pick it up and give it a try, you could even find it in a bargain bin (if they still have those).

I think they are those trains that carry bodies from Nova Prospekt to the Citadel.

they carried bodies?

*loads HL2 with an evil smile*

The cradle level in Thief 3 > all.

That's the scariest level I've ever played. Everybody should try it out!
Doom3 was scary at start, but got annoying soon. IMO Ravenholm is scarier than Doom3 because it's balanced correctly, but I wouldn't call it 'scary'.
