Hey! I tried to use rcon the other day with a friend so we could both have access to server-side console commands as we play, but I couldn't get it to work. Here's our set up: My friend runs a regular non-dedicated server on his computer, which is behind a router (with the proper HL2 port forwarded so people can join and play), I am also behind a router, with HL2 ports forwarded incase I ever want to create a server. Some of this info might seem unimportant, but I thought it might be somehow relevant.

My friend issues the command rcon_password whatever where whatever is the password, and then I issue the following commands in my console:
rcon_password whatever
rcon say hello

I just use the say hello command as an example, no matter what command I try, it always ends with an error saying it cannot connect to the server. My client freezes for a few seconds, while the server is unnaffected, and then it spits out that cannot connect error in my console. Everything seems right... in the error it says that it cannot connect to the proper IP and port, so I don't know what the problem is.

Does the person who runs the server have to do something special to start RCON or something? Please someone help!!! Thanks =)

It's a steam thing. Chances are you need to restart the server.

I have had to restart my server 3-4 times to get rcon working again.

I suggest using HLSW to connect to the server and test rcon that way. If you get the 'cannot connect' error that way to then you for sure need to restart the server.
