It makes sense:

The Perseids are caused when the Earth passes through debris shed by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. This comet travels through the inner planets every 130 years, most recently in 1992.

The shooting stars are just debris left from the comet, and the debris stays there for us to pass through every year.

This was really the only clarification I needed. It isn't immediately obvious (to one such as I who hasn't studied astronomy) that the debris from a single comet remains dense enough, even after a decade and a half, to form yearly meteor showers.
