what'd Narcolepys JUST SAY? No anti- Halo 2 rants. Halo 2 is a worse game, but PCs just aren't as popular as consoles right now. The fact is, any other year, HL2 would've been first EVERYWHERE, but so many crazy games came out this year, there was too much competition.

That is nice. Halo 2 was a good game, but the IGN reviewers thought HL2 was better than Halo 2 across the board :thumbs: Like you said, considering Xbox has a 18M install base and sold 6.4M copies it was almost a given it would win. But note that from the IGN reviewers that Halo 2 was not even #2 in Game of the Year!

This shows how hype can and install base can skew reader responses. How many of the readers played HL2, Halo 2, and MP2? I am certain less than 600k have played MP2. Also note that HL2 beat Halo 2 from the editors in every category in which they competed where the readers chose Halo 2:

BEST FPS: Half-Life 2
Runner up: Halo 2
Readers' Choice: Halo 2

BEST GRAPHICS: Half-Life 2

BEST USE OF SOUND: Half-Life 2

And the given:

HL2 also did well in PC Story (Runner up and Readers' Choice) and Overall Story (Runner up).

The funny part is Tribes beat HL2 editors pics for best PC story, but HL2 got runner up behind MGS3 on Overall Story. Obviously some of the console editors like HL2's theme better.

Which reminds me of GS: All I have to say is GS chose HL2 over Halo 2 (and other games rated better than HL2 like UT2004) for best FPS.

The point: All are great games, go play the ones you like.

Was pointless considering YOU started a thread specifically comparing their awards. ::wink:: How else do you explain saying, "HL2 got Runner up... 1st Place went to Halo 2" in your post? So OF COURSE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO REPLY ON THIS. If you did not intend people to rant on Halo 2 you should have done your part in not specifically trying to point it out. It would have been good enough to say what awards it got.

So now the carnage shall fallow and we can all blame you! ;P

Mwahahahahaha!!!! But reallly, wouldn't you like to know what got first place when I say that HL2 got runner up? And there's a difference between an honest opinion and the flame wars that pop up here so often.

"Galo 2" was what I was trying to avoid, not "I personally think Half-Life 2 should have won, IMO."

I'm surprised that San Andreas didn't get GOTY - it's an amazing piece of work. Maybe it's because Xbox owners are, on the whole, more web-savvy?

Btw, I think Halo 2 rocks. But then again, the Multiplayer elements in game are VERY important to me. e.g. I have spent the last 2 years playing BF1942 and my most anticipated game of 2005 is BF2.

HL2 (and the first HL) were exceptions to the rules for me. I get bored with most single player games. HL2 had a good story, great scripting, superb acting talent and drama, and a 3D world that had life and physics that mattered. It was like a movie without trying to be a movie.

Anyhow, Halo 2 has great MP. The SP was too short, but the MP is really popular and plays well. Evolutionary is good if it gives people what they want. People wanted Halo 2--just like we wanted HL2. I think HL2 is much better (especially now with CS:S bots and HL2DM), but I would not deny that Halo 2 is a great game. Flaws? Yes. Game of the year? Not in my opinion and for my tastes. Great game? No doubt!
