REAL Antlions

Valve probably did make up the name. It goes with the Noun-Noun of Half Life names

Hound-Eye
Bull-Squid
Head-Crab

Each one describes the creature.

Antlions hunt in packs (like lions) and resemble a insects (Like ants).

This was mentioned before.

Wow, thats really cool, I wonder if there are real life Head crabs.... lol. I kinda figured that the real antlions would be like ants, or like lions, not flys. They shoulda been called antfly, or flylion lol.

Aint they fire ants? or just plain red ants? Cause you have the red and black ants, there the general names of them. Unless your talking about forest ants, there rather big, the warrior ants are huge tho, so they could be warrior ants in SimAnt.

No no, antlions lived in those dark holes in the ground and simant played that cool animation when you walked over it and it ate you. But antlions are not actual ants. I think they're some wort of beatle...i think...

There is alot of mythology attached to Antlions. I wonder if there are any references to them in the HL2 plot???

El_Chi: I thought that aswell, I wanna like drop a grenade down there, see what happens. I wonder if it will be like ants nest, when if you disturb around the exit, they all come out, pissed as hell. you know in the bug bait vid, you can hear a sort of scuttling about when you reach the wholes, you reacon thats the combine soldiers running into place, or antlions in a nest underground?

I hope its the nest underground, the whole Antlion aspect of Half-Life 2 is what I'm getting excited about. They just look so cool, and the fact you can control them with pheremones, it just sounds so cool!!

You know, there is such a thing as Head Crabs...but...uh they arent exactly what you might think. Lets just say, in this case head doesnt mean the thing on your shoulders.

Thats an Ant Lion Guard. Just a bigger one thats likely the controler for the small units. That is where he picks up the bug baits from, a dead Ant Lion Guard.

LOL, havent u guys seen Antlions in real life?? Instead of looking at computer simulated antlions u can perhaps walk outside and find some sand where the antlions live. I have antlions living right next to the steps to my house, they hunt with a very cool tecnique. . If u look at the HL2 antlions and the real-life antlions u can see that they have identical head. But this whole thread is really old news...

I used to have them at my middle school up until they plopped down a new building atop of the dirt that those antlions used. Anyway it was cool to drop ants in the holes. The ants would try to climb up the slope and the antlion would simply throw dirt into the air to make the ant lose its grip. Then it would clamp onto the ant and drag it under the sand.

Okay…not quite…but almost. Thomas pointed out a picture on Yahoo! News of what appears to be a miniature headcrab. It’s anatomically correct, but only smaller (maybe it’s a baby)

We have these bettles in Flroida. They hide under the sand and eat ants when they fall in their pit because the ants can't crawl up. I used to drop ants into the pits and watch them eat it for fun when I was a kid.

Ok antlions are not flies. They are fat little worms that sit in their own traps waiting for ants to fall down. The are as deadly as LIONS to ANTS (yes, thats actually where the name comes from) The the pic i lovingly made. I learned all this when i was like five from Krafts Kritters, cool show.
