There's a lot of difference believe me. Particularly due to this:

Paul Verhoeven admits to never finishing the novel, claiming he read through the first few chapters and becoming both bored and depressed.

Put it this way, in the book the bugs have spaceships and guns.

And Dizzy is a man who dies in the first chapter.
