Realistic Texture pack (over 2k!)

You do have this line in the vmt right?
Code:
"$surfaceprop" "metal"

Also, post one of the .vmt's you used (paste it in a post). I don't know much about it, but maybe a "fresh" eye will spot something wrong (me or someone else).

I downloaded a few of the textures converted by MCRAT_59 and I'm pretty sure I'm getting the same problem... everything also shows up in Hammer and in-game, but everything seems to be acting as a default brick material.

Here's what the .vmt says for a wood crate texture:

Code:
"LightmappedGeneric"
{
	"$baseTexture" "photorealistic_crate/crate01_front"
	"$surfprop" "wood_box"
}

I've read through a few tutorials on custom texturing and they all seem to correspond to what is written in these .vmts... so I've got no idea why the surfprop isn't registering. Has anyone AT ALL managed to get these to work?

edit: Well I just realised a nanosecond after I submitted this post that surfprop != surfaceprop. :upstare:

Check to make sure you didn't extract them to another subdirectory.

C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\********\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials

Is where i have placed all the custom textures.. and they arent showing up in hammer..

I got the textures to work, I am currently trying to figure out how to make wad's into vtf's i made the jpeg into a wad using wally... now in the menu of cs:s SDK i see where it sais convert wad to vtf.. but how do i get the wad into the sdk?
get it?

you need a program called wally for converting textures. its on tellefragged.net or somthing similar, I forget...

You have to convert the textures inside the wads to the vtf and vmt format that can be used by the new Hammer for Source Games. There is a command inside Hammer to do that but it didn work too well for me so I used Wally to extract the textures and then converted them to vtf with my VtexGUI utility.

I downloaded Wally can it convert these jpg files to vtf or whatever? Or will I download what you mentioned?

Am I correct in saying that a collection of vtf files is a WAD and Hammer can use these WAD files to pick/use textures?

Wally can't convert to vtf.
You have to use VTex to convert those jpegs (it's included in the SDK).
No, Source games don't use Wad, they use vtf and vmt.
A pack of vtf files is not a wad.
The new Hammer for Source Games don't use Wads.

There's a Vtex GUI?!?! I WANT IT!

Seriously. Where?

I've come across this texture pack before, and I use it to this day. It's really useful for smaller textures, but falls short to the standards of the HL2 textures.

Still, if you're making maps, it's invaluable if you ever need a certain texture that HL2 doesn't have. ...doesn't happen very often, so this texture pack is especially useful with other games, like UT2004, where the default textures are mostly generic and you need better ones.

There were lots of folders (like Terra) that I had to delete (or clean out) so that I could find the good textures among the bad... So I just deleted the bad.

Great texture pack if you take the time to filter it... if you leave it as-is, it's impossible to find what you're looking for amongst the lesser ones.

How do i use Photo shop to turn all the textures to targa at once, instead of one by one?

File>Automate>Batch

...in Photoshop CS. Pretty sure it's a new feature, but I'm not sure.

You have to record an Action in which you save a JPG file to TGA to a specific folder first. The Batch function will ask you which Action to run on all the files.

nice..... (adding length) edit: the links in one of his words just skim your mouse over the text m'kay?

This seems great. Can someone explain to me in very basic language how to use these textures with the hammer editor? I don't know about these file types and everything.

Check page 5 bottom post

I went to the website, but it was in French. I went to forums, then "map pack", but couldn't figure out how to download it.

Put them in the "materials" directory of the game you are writing a map for.

i.e. to use the textures for death match:
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\YourUserName\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\materials

Notice that this is not in the Hammer installation path.

I assume you need help with where to put the .vmt and .vtf files, yes?

I dont see anything that links to a french website.

It was on page 5. Here is what it said:

"Hello !
I have converted the photorealistic texture pack for Half life 2

It can be downloaded at: http://nicosoftgames.free.fr
Go to the forum; and on the Half life 2 topic, choose Texture pack

Here, you can download all the texture pack converted for HL²"

I did that and the pics I put on the last post were from the forum. You can see the words there are french. If you don't do that don't you have to convert all the pics to another format individually?

I'm as lost as you are in finding the textures.
Dunno if it exists anymore.

There are a lot of tutorials on converting jpg's tga's to vtf's

I converted the picture I want to use as a texture to a vtf and put it in the directory specified in page 5 of this thread. Now, how do I find it?

It should show up in hammer automatically, assuming you are loading the right game in the sdk menu.

I know this is very old, but I installed th textures from that French site, put them in the materials folder of Half-Life 2, and while they're appearing in my texture browser, they're all just black and purple checkers
Any help?

Hammer, didn't bother with the game. If they're like that in Hammer, won't they automatically be like that in game?

Not neccessarily.
Have you checked to make sure your camera is set to one that shows textures?

same problem, all the files r jpg, and when i convert them to vmt and vtf they only show as checkered in browser and it says their size is only 64x64, when i saved as 256x256. I don't understand why it does this, because the only folder it seems to work in is sparys, but ehy hav a problem where they jus show through every wall, really messed

Getting back to the post on the french website, could someone please just send me the link to the post as I can't seem to find it thanks, also are the material properties set correctly on that download ie wood is wood ect? Cheers
