Hi,
I need to read a English book for school, but really have no idea what to read.

Genres I like:
History, eg a story about someone in WW2
Books about any kind of personal problems(drugs, prostitution, abuse etc)
Adventures

Things I absolutely hate:
Science-Fiction
Very thinking-intensive books, I never understand them

Also the book should not be too long, need to finish it by Monday.

Any suggestions?

Angels & Demons.
Adventure and a bit of a history lesson.

And for the WW2/history part:
- Agent Zigzag by Ben MacIntyre
- Empire of the Sun by JG Ballard
- For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway

A really good short novel I read recently was
- The Fire Gospel by Michel Fabre
Honestly, it's great and you'll finish it quickly.

Having just finished my Literature course (having got little pleasure from books for quite some time), I have a strange urge to read, of all authors, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Tender is the Night is about a psychiatrist who falls in love with a patient of his, and but as he gradually cures her, he develops his own problems (its basically a metaphor for Fitzgerald's own marriage). That's just a general recommendation, since you'll probably not get it finished by Monday unless you're diligent (500 odd pages IIRC). The Great Gatsby is a nice and short alternative (about a third of the size), not too thinking intensive, but quite rich nonetheless. Not really about 'personal problems' in the same way, but it is about general degeneracy, over-obsessive and misplaced love. Though it's quite likely that you'll have read it / or be going to read it...

1984 or Brave New World...both exceptional books in my inventory

Also try Moby Dick

if you haven't read Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose you would probably ****ing love it

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Exceptional book, one of the best I've ever read.

Blindness by Jose Saramago.

Fantastic read. If you like stories with characters that have personal problems, you'll love this - the story is rich with f**ked up characters. Very creepy story at the same time.

Try "Use of Weapons" by Iain M Banks.

He said he hates Sci-Fi so I left that one out. It's not strictly Sci-Fi, but some stuff in it is kind of out there.

True, Philip K Dick does mostly write sci-fi.... I've never thought of A Scanner Darkly as sci-fi but can see how it might go in that category.

I'll also recommend The Pearl by John Steinbeck because it's very short (you can probably read it in a day) and one of my favorites of his. It maybe has some adventure elements depending on what you consider adventure. I think the message of the book is pretty clear if you need to write a report on it. Only problem is it might not be "advanced" enough... I remember reading it in class when I was ~14 years old.

Jeff Shaara is great for historically accurate and riveting war fiction.

Neil Gaiman could fit adventures if ya don't mind heavy fantasy elements.

Thanks for all the replies, I wikipedia'd them all and I get 1984 and Angels & Demons for now. There were also a lot of other interesting ones which I'll keep in my mind for the future ;)

Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. Greatest book I've ever read.

Def avoid that Dan Brown shit. Its strictly supermarket bookclub reading.

The Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger

Best urban adventure. Ever.

Yeah, Catcher in the Rye is one of my favourite books ever. I read it literally every time I travel by train or airplane.

Good book about drugs and stuff like that is the "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo", it's not an English book but I'm sure it was translated.

The Da Vinci Code awesome book

Get. Out. You're not allowed to call that over-hyped, dim-witted, empty-headed retarded piece of trash readable, much less awesome. It isn't a book so much as it is a good way to stop my sofa from wobbling.

Ender's Game. It's sci-fi written by a Mormon. But it's brilliant, I loved every part of it, very philosophical towards the end.

Huh I forgot he was mormon. I must have heard it like once. But I don't see why a mormon writing sci-fi would be a bad thing?
