Recommend me a new mouse

My birthday was this week. Got some nice stuff along with a Best Buy gift card from a friend. The 4th of July sale was still in effect. So, i went to get myself a nice new Logitech webcam and i also went got the MX518 since it was on sale. "I can always exchange", thinking in the back of my mind.

Well, i can't say that i am disappointed. I thought it would have a big slope to it judging from the pictures that i have seen but it's barely noticeable when i use it. It has plenty of buttons and it's very precise.
So, whoever suggested this particular mouse to me. I stand corrected.

I've had mine for a few years. Don't use solvents to clean it. I think that may be what made it start to peel on the side (near the side buttons). also the paint came off the logitech logo.

Can one of you that owns this mouse tell me how to properly enable the "Enable Notification" for switching between dpi settings? It's supposed to play a sound when you change your dpi but i am not hearing anything. I am using Windows 7, by the way.

I never used DPI switching. I deleted all the presets but the fastest and disabled the buttons (or configured them to do something else).

I know that doesn't help, but I'm just letting you know that I can't help, even though I own the mouse.

I didn't know it was "supposed" to. I sure as hell don't need it though. Can't you tell from a change in mouse speed whether you did or not?

Yes, it's supposed to. Sometimes i press on one of button during frantic firefights and it gets me killed because it moved the dpi up or down.

Use the setpoint options to turn the button function off. Or get better finger control, n@@b :p

Exactly, and I hated how.. for like a month, the computer would start up and it was at its default speed setting. I got fed up and that's why I removed all of the slower speeds and reconfigured the DPI buttons to do nothing. It was actually a very frustrating software set. But I eventually got it working right.

This is thing I like about the Deathadder, it stores that information in the mouse itself.

My main gripe with the mx518 was that it hurt my hand. I hate those contoured mice.

I'm starting to sound like you.

I did but apparently you can't read. I checked the "Enabled Notification" mark but it still won't play a sound.

I assume the drivers are installed?

By the by, I bought the Xai. It's not quite as comfortable as a right-handed mouse like the Deathadder, but it's still comfortable. The sides aren't glossy, either, which is a big plus. I've yet to try it out on an FPS (no internet), but it's not as slippery, and you don't leave behind sweat if you've been using it for a couple of hours.

No internet means no drivers means no extra buttons, so for now I've not had the chance to take advantage of the two extra buttons. It's not particularly hard to not press them, though, which a lot of people were complaining about. They have a different response from the Deathadder. Possibly not quite as nice to click, but they're well positioned.

The DPI switcher on the top is a great addition. Two DPIs is about as many as I'd ever use, high and low, and it's as simple as it could ever be to switch between them. Can't change the DPI without the drivers it seems, though.

There's a load of technology in this mouse which I'm going to play with when I get the drivers installed. Their ExactSense stuff. You can change it on the fly directly on the mouse without the drivers, but I figure it'd be easier if I use the on-screen interface. The mouse works perfectly well without downloading drivers, by the by. So you can move it around as you please.

If anyone's interested, I'd recommend the SteelSeries Xai. I can imagine it'd last longer than my Deathadder did, and the build quality's excellent. No flashing lights, but for some that's a plus. It doesn't detract from the scroll wheel's functionality, anyway. £50's a bit steep, but it's on par with the Imperator.

>No internet.

Why don't you bring a USB stick to wherever you are when you post this? You can order one for like $7. Then download the driver.

I wouldn't mind if there was a button to hold down for a 2nd DPI setting (for example, extremely slow, for artwork or something) Or if the button was a toggle might be better. But it drives me crazy having + and - buttons to change speeds. Some kind of OCD gets me, and I constantly click it to be sure its at full speed or something. Plus accidentally clicking one could **** up your game and shouldn't be possible. I don't know where they would put the button so it wouldn't be hard to access, but would never be accidentally clicked. Far to the back on the side?

So, those are my requirements. Otherwise, I don't want to change speeds on the fly.

I've already downloaded the driver and moved it onto my phone. Been having to download stuff all week on my phone. Awkward, and 'unlimited' access means all of about 1GB.

Sorry, I didn't specify how the DPI switcher worked. It is a toggle, just as you described, and it's below the mouse wheel, so it's very unlikely you'd hit it by accident. This is pretty much ideal for me. The Deathadder's real-time DPI changer was continuous (relatively), going from anywhere from 0 to 10. The default fast is incredibly fast (it's a laser mouse, so it's has a ridiculous top DPI), but you slow it down.

Piccy for you to see the placement of the button. There's also an 'ikkle light so you can see which setting you have it on. SteelSeries seem to be a great company. I got their Siberia v2 headset, too. I'll have to keep an eye on them.

I'm not talking about notifications, they're irrelevant to me and I've never touched it, assuming it even exists. I know it's not on by default because neither me nor anyone I know has ever had "notifications" for changing dpi on this mouse. I'm suggesting an alternative, shutting the buttons down, which you can do in setpoint. Or the recommended alternative, get used to controlling your mouse (I doubt it'll be an issue after a couple gaming session).

Check the Enable Notification box if you to hear a sound when you change mouse sensitivity while gaming. You can use the Windows Control Panel to choose the sound.

It may be irrelevant to you but not to me. The function is there for a reason and i want to take advantage of it.

I know that external notifications can be negated by the game somehow. I know my antivirus which had an audible "Definitions have been updated" sound were rarely heard when I was in game (I knew it was there because of the pop up box). Of course that was before I turned the notification to that off too.

I returned the MX518 and exchanged it for the G500 which was on sale. The placement of the side buttons is much better, it has plenty of neat features and i saved money on top of that. I like it.
