Recycling Aluminum and Steel and Lead are not bullshit. Some recycling is bullshit, the ones I listed are some that are not.

Yeah metals are the best recycled material...but the majority of the rest is a waste of time and money

Including plastic? I don't feel like watching the entire video.

Including plastic? I don't feel like watching the entire video.

basically it takes a lot of energy to recycle plastic but it can be good to recycle plastic. But the main point of the video is that the amount of time and money spent on recycling only benefits other people, not the taxpayer, and your not getting paid for it. If the 1st people recycling were getting paid for it, it'd be worth it

The benefit of recycling plastic is that it comes from petroleum, and petroleum is a dwindling resource. Unless more plastics like those made from Corn are produced, we will be without plastics. And they are too valuable really.

I heard soon with genetic engineering we can make bacteria that poop out plastic.

Also, some of the arguments in the video are unique to America. Such as transportation over long distances.

The points they're trying to make are valid, but they're made incredibly poorly. The vaudeville style of the piece is convincing to Joe Consumer, who will respond to this type of showmanship (no matter what they're saying). If you're looking for good arguments against recycling, this isn't the video for you. For example, recycling is bad because:

*there's a landfill in L.A. that reclaims methane.

*for some recyclables, it's not cost-effective nor energy-effective.

*it's complicated for a consumer to figure out how to handle the separation when presented with an overly-complicated separation model.

*there's plenty of room in available landfill space for our trash production for a long time.

*the jobs created by the recycling industry aren't very nice.

Again, I agree with many of the main points they make, the authors just make a lousy argument for them.

Why does it matter? It takes just as much energy to put stuff in the recycle bin as it does to put it in the garbage...

not really dude, have you ever seen those lists of what you can put into the recycling bin and what you can't??

heres an example, its not mine but its close:

Adorable.

Why does helping the planet need to be cost-effective?

*it's complicated for a consumer to figure out how to handle the separation when presented with an overly-complicated separation model.
;(

*there's plenty of room in available landfill space for our trash production for a long time.
There's also plenty of room in your mother OH OH OH

*the jobs created by the recycling industry aren't very nice.
;(

A job is a job.

I love Penn and Teller. Who would have thought they'd go from magicians into politics.

Check out the short film at this site:-

It's about 20 minutes long, but it's worthwhile as it provides a big picture as to the major problems that face us.

Recycling isn't in itself bad, but it isn't a perfect circle and Plastics more than anything else are the big problem. We don't recycle plastics, like we do glass, aluminium or tin we really reuse them in a different fashion and there is an endgame to how far we can reuse them.

I think it's unfortunate that the OPs video seems to concentrate purely on the fiscal front though.

I heard soon with genetic engineering we can make bacteria that poop out plastic.

Bacteria and plants have both been engineered to produce plastic in labs. But genetic engineering is the devil omgomg.

Strange as this sounds, that actually helps me. I recycle all my old crap and spend ages taking out the staples because I didn't think they were allowed. You've saved me tons of time!

Recycle mobile phone batteries. If not, we may have no niobium, tantalum and other rare earth metals to produce new mobile phones and electronics in the future.

I hate that ****ing show with a passion. They're so full of shit.

Really? I love Penn & Teller's Bullshit!

Two episodes I disagree with them fairly heavily on, being the recycling episode and the second hand smoking episode, but for the most part I have a skeptical mindset very similar to their own.

Well, they're market-anarchists and doesn't believe in global warming, which automatically make them douchebags in my book. Besides, I find their humour unfunny and the fat guy annoys me to no end.

I haven't seen the Global Warming episode. I probably would disagree with it too.

I love Penn & Teller though... Penn's in your face attitude is always amusing. The show is meant to be confrontational.

They don't believe in Global warming? All shit aside, they surely can't think that pumping the amount of pollutants we have into the atmosphere since the Industrial revolution isn't having an impact?

Another example of white man complaining.

Because youre notting getting paid.

Pfft. (I raceist)

Meh... Me recycling a few cans is not goanna stop this world circling the drain

Would slow down abit.

Say everyone recycled a can a day. On a massive scale thats like how many? That would certainly be better and would slow down the effect.

"Anyone who disagrees with me is a douchebag"

Add me to the list.

I believe global warming hype is the biggest deterrent to preventing pollution. There are already many scientific proven facts and things we can observe with our own eyes/noses that indicate a reduction in pollution would be a good thing. The concept of man made global warming is unproven, and even if the earth's temperature does increase by a few degrees, that doesn't necessarily mean disaster. Rather than focusing on reasonable and achievable reductions in pollution; something few are against, a political stalemate is created.

My point was that these were the (lousy) arguments they used in their offense against recycling.

"If you're looking for good arguments against recycling, this isn't the video for you. For example, recycling is bad because:"

Just sounded to me like you were listing good arguments. My bad.
