Red Faction: Guerilla SP demo impressions.

Honestly, I'm not usually a graphics whore, but the PS3 demo is really grainy/blurry. I'd probably wait for the PC version, so I could also enjoy a higher framerate.

It's hard to say, according to the devs at the official forums, the PC version will probably come out a (few) month(s) later, because they want to make a proper port and not rush it just to get it out at the same time as the console versions.

True, but the game being 3rd person and having trophies. Im leaning towards PS3.

Demo out for us non-subscribed plebians yet?

Any word on the "city" environments in the game? I heard there was supposed to be some ... just wondering if I should get my hopes up for tearing down skyscrapers or not (highly doubt it). Something like that would really make the game for me.

As it is ... it feels like a bit like a collection of really flimsy shacks spread around barren terrain. The fact that you're not in or surrounded by buildings really makes it less impactful on the gameplay. I wish terrain deformation was still in ... would make more sense considering the environment (and the focus on mining).

Also the shooting controls don't feel tight or responsive and the cover system is broken. I really would have preferred a more linear, story driven first person shooter in the vein of the first game, albeit with the awesome building destruction engine and the originals terrain deformation.

Nevertheless I'll rent it and give it a chance. If nothing else I can already tell it's a whole lot better than the garbage Volition has produced since the first Red Faction (RF2 and Saints Row 1/2).

I do not agree with the shooting controls not feeling tight, they feel as tight as they can without resorting to GTAIV auto-lockon.

And yes, there are city environments, like Eos, but I'm not aware of any skyscrapers, I think the highest habitable buildings are like 6-7 stories.

However, the PC version might or might not come with a modkit/editor, the devs are still undecided on that.

6-7 stories is all I could reasonably expect, the destruction should get really interesting and gameplay changing there.

As far as the shooting ... I wasn't comparing it so much to other third person shooters as I was to FPS games like the first. My point isn't that it doesn't feel very visceral ... "tight" was the wrong word.

Fair enough, however, originally Red Faction: Guerilla was in first-person, but when shown to a group of people outside the dev team, they felt it was better to go third-person, because it made it easier to enjoy the destruction system and as well as being able to better avoid debris.

I thought they pulled off switching to a third person view really well. Aiming is perfect as far as third person goes, and the cover system works like it's supposed to. However, in the demo, I run around, blowing stuff up much more often than I use combat.

played this last night. tons of fun my only concern is that the amount of bad guys forced you to get to the mech right away (timed). no drawn out gun fights or sneaking up on anybody. by the end of it I was using the remote charges more than the assualt rifle. also what other weapons are there? I found the shotgun

There's a nice pistol in there too. Too bad the rest of the goodies are locked in the demo.

Just played it and it's fun as hell, but I suck at it. I suppose my run-in-guns-blazing technique doesn't work too well for this game.

I usually run in, blow some stuff up, kill a few baddies, and run away. Common guerrilla tactics.

Has anyone had a citizen start fighting the EDF soldiers with you? This has only happened to me once and it was only one person.

Once or twice. If you build up their morale enough they'll scavenge weapons from dead EDF soldiers and fight back.
